    A New Opportunity and what you’ll do...

    The Fire Prevention Specialist has a critical role, enhancing community safety by conducting thorough fire safety inspections, reviewing construction plans, and providing expert guidance on fire prevention measures.

    What You'll Do:
    • Conduct advanced fire safety inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and standards.
    • Review and approve construction plans and specifications to ensure they meet fire safety requirements.
    • Provide expert technical guidance on fire prevention matters to the Fire Department staff and the public.
    • Serve as a functional lead, guiding and mentoring other inspectors.
    • Actively participate in continuous professional development to stay abreast of the latest fire safety regulations and best practices.


    What You'll Bring:
    • Proven ability to apply and interpret fire and building codes, with relevant certifications (e.g., ICC certifications) a strong plus.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in plan review and analysis.
    • A strong commitment to public service and a desire to make a positive impact on the community.
    • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with a diverse range of stakeholders.


    This is a non-safety, civilian position with advancement opportunities.

    Experience and Qualifications for Success!

    A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from college with a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related field and two years' experience performing fire protection engineering duties, including responsibility for plan checking or field inspection of fire protection systems or graduation from college with an associate's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field and five years' experience performing fire protection engineering duties, including responsibility for plan checking or field inspection of fire protection systems.

    License: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License and an acceptable driving record is required.

    Certificates: Certificate of completion of PC 832 is highly desirable prior to appointment and is required within one year of appointment. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, an International Code Council Fire Inspector certification.

    Desirable: Plans Examiner certification from the International Code Council or California State Fire Marshal's Office. Successful completion of California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D or Fire Prevention I series courses or International Code Council Fire Inspector I or II certifications; State of California registered Fire Protection Engineer.
