    Department Administrative Assistant
    (Administrative Support Coordinator I)

    Compensation and Benefits

    Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $3,864 - $4,058 per month

    Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,864 - $6,072 per month
    • This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.

    The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.     Job Summary

    This position provides administrative and clerical support to the chair and faculty of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education Department. The Department Administrative Assistant assists the department chair to ensure that the department meets all University and College requirements and deadlines accurately and promptly. This position requires considerable discretion and judgment in order to effectively coordinate and support all functions related to delivery of academic programs.

    Key Qualifications
    • Thorough knowledge of office methods, procedures, and standard practices, including principles of customer service.
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    • Knowledge of office systems and ability to use office technology, equipment, systems, and software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, Adobe).
    • Working knowledge of budget practices and procedures.
    • Skill/Ability to:
      • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing and draft/compose correspondence and standard reports.
      • Excellent interpersonal skills at all levels with the ability to work effectively as part of a team and contribute to the department, school and university.
      • Ability to perform standard business math, such as calculate ratios and percentages, track financial data, and make simple projections.
      • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the work group and serve as a liaison for the unit to other academic departments including those at a higher level and those sensitive or confidential in nature.
      • Learn and interpret a wide variety of complex operations and academic policies and procedures and support the mission of the department, school, and university.
      • Work independently and use sound judgment and discretion in establishing effective business processes and meeting deadlines.
      • Independently organize and prioritize multiple work assignments and projects required in all major duties and responsibilities.
      • Use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages.
      • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
      • Ability to apply independently a wide variety of policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not exist.
      • Ability to handle effectively a broader range of interpersonal contacts, including those at a higher level and those sensitive in nature.
      • Ability to troubleshoot most office administration problems and respond to all inquiries and requests related to campus wide programs.

    Education and Experience
    • Equivalent to the completion of a high school program, technical/vocational program.
    • Three years of recent progressive office administrative or clerical experience.
      • Preferred Skills:
        • Experience reconciling and maintaining financial accounts.
        • Proficient in the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and the internet.


    Department Summary

    The Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education prepares bachelor's, master's and credential level students in the diverse disciplines of animal science, technology and industry management as well as teacher preparation and agricultural communications.

    The Department stresses basic and advanced scientific concepts and the application of science to create the technical and managerial skills required in animal agriculture today and tomorrow. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and communicative skills to solve production managerial, processing, environmental and ethical problems.

    The development of technical and professionally competent teachers of agriculture, agricultural leaders, communicators and problem solvers is accomplished through quality classroom, laboratory and field experience.

    The Department works closely with the animal industry, secondary schools, colleges, universities and government agencies to integrate the student's education with industry experience and future employers to empower students for professional careers in modern agriculture.
