    This position will be located at the Lewis and Clark State Office Building at 1101 Riverside Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65101.

    You will be joining the Water Quality Standards Unit, where science and policy meet to protect Missouri’s waterways! This position has the ability to make lasting change which impacts all Missourians. You will work with a diverse group of staff and stakeholders to review, revise, or apply Missouri’s water quality standards which are the foundation for a wide range of programs under the federal Clean Water Act. This position researches a variety of water quality contaminants and allows you to stay up to date with current water topics

    • Assist in the triennial review and revision of Missouri’s water quality standards. Provide scientific justification of the necessity of proposed regulations for the protection of water quality.
    • Stay informed on technical information pertaining to water quality through literature reviews of the latest research and science, attending trainings and conferences, and sharing information with colleagues.
    • Prepare and deliver presentations on water quality issues.
    • Represent the unit in meetings and coordinate with colleagues and stakeholders.
    • Review, provide comments, and respond to Use Attainability Analyses, National Environmental Policy Act reviews, studies for the development of site-specific criteria, water effect ratios, metals translator studies, and other investigations to modify or revise water quality criteria.
    • Act as the subject matter expert for water quality standards variances. Establish procedures for developing and implementing variances and coordinate with colleagues and stakeholders throughout the variance process.
    • Use ArcGIS to manage and maintain water quality standards data, conduct analyses of regional watershed characteristics, and produce informational and educational maps of internal and external use.
    • Assist with development of environmental and economic impact reports.


    To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

    • Environmental Science : Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to protect and improve the quality of the environment and its resources; and to monitor, control, abate, and prevent pollutants.
    • Research : Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
    • Oral and Written Communication : Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, consider the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
    • Problem Solving : Identifies and analyzes problems; weighs relevance and accuracy of information; generates and evaluates alternative solutions; makes recommendations.
    • Self-Management : Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.


    Equivalent to those typically gained by:

    • A bachelor’s degree* and 0-4 years of relevant experience.
    • *A minimum of 30 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, Geology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field.
