    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    Government Canyon is designated as a State Natural Area and is one of the largest karst preserves in the nation. Employees at GCSNA have a unique opportunity to both see and participate in active habitat restoration and management, ongoing research, and the benefits of a massive wilderness located inside the city limits of a major metropolitan area.

    Under the general supervision and daily direction of the Government Canyon State Natural Area Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work which includes all phases of maintenance and repairs to facilities, equipment and grounds to include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, preventative maintenance to include cleaning and inspecting, and mechanics at Government Canyon State Natural Area. Serves as the Back-Up Utility Plant Operator (UPO) and assists in the operation, maintenance and repairs to the Water/Wastewater Distribution Systems. Responsible for regulatory compliance in all utility operations and completion of required reports and laboratory testing as required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Performs daily preventative maintenance (cleaning/inspecting) of public restrooms and rental facilities, including group facilities. Performs all aspects of grounds keeping, habitat and trail management including, but not limited to trimming, weeding, mowing and herbicide/pesticide application in accordance with all State regulations. Operates and maintains all types of equipment such as hand tools, power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, trucks, tractors, and other gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. Assists with visitor services including providing customer service and information to park visitors. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

    NOTE : Government Canyon is served by an army of volunteers. At times we have up to 13 volunteer park hosts occupying 7 host sites. Working alongside and training volunteers is a regular occurrence and very important at GCSNA.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from High School or GED.

    Experience :

    Three years facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.

    Licensure :

    Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.

    Must possess or be able to obtain, within one year of employment, a class "D" Water license and an OSSF Installer 1 license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

    NOTE : Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license and compliance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's (TCEQ) Criminal Conviction Guidelines.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :

    Experience :

    Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    College coursework in Recreation & Parks, Wildlife Biology, Forestry, Geology, Archeology or related fields.

    Experience :

    Experience working with water or wastewater systems;

    Customer service and public relations experience;

    Experience in carpentry, welding, and/or plumbing.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of general work site safety;

    Knowledge of general custodial duties;

    Knowledge of standard construction repair and maintenance techniques;

    Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks;

    Knowledge of natural and cultural resource protection techniques;

    Knowledge of basic mathematics;

    Knowledge of water distribution systems;

    Knowledge of wastewater systems;

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

    Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment;

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

    Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions;

    Ability to work as a member of a team;

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

    Ability to operate and maintain utility systems in accordance with TCEQ rules and regulations:

    Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

    Ability to maintain all types of equipment such as hand tools, power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, trucks, tractors, and other gasoline and diesel-powered equipment;

    Ability to produce electronic reports;

    Ability to supervise alternative workforce;

    Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use;

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes flexible schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

    Required to respond to emergency situations;

    Required to work long schedules during peak visitation demand;

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

    Required to operate a State vehicle;

    Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;

    Must conform to TPWD employee dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
