    What You'll Be Doing

    The Student Intern position with Community Services is a great opportunity for current undergraduate and graduate students to get exposure to work in a local government setting. You’ll work on one or more projects that will provide you with relevant experience when looking for a full-time job in the future.

    In addition to working on your identified project(s), the Community Services Department incorporates several other elements into the internship:
    • Ability to attend meetings that provide broad exposure to the entire department's operations
    • Participate in site visits, informational interviews and ride-alongs to provide an overview of all County departments
    • Cohort experience with interns from other departments who often get together for lunch or to socialize after work

    Potential summer projects include:

    • A ssist with the creation of strategic plans for the Parks and/or Libraries divisions
    • Participate in the development of a small area land use plan for the Little River community in eastern Wake County
    • Update the staffing model for the Parks division
    • Conduct observational research to identify usage patterns in libraries
    • Develop an evaluation program for park customers who rent picnic shelters

    However, it’s possible that other projects will emerge between now and when the internship starts. We try to match each intern with a project(s) that best fits their interests and goals.

    The work will be primarily in office in downtown Raleigh, with some remote work as approved.

    This internship is scheduled to end August 2025.

    About Our Team

    The Wake County Community Services Department is one of the largest County departments and consists of four divisions: Administration; Public Libraries; Planning, Development & Inspections; and Parks, Recreation & Open Space. The department employs over 750 individuals in full time, part time and temporary positions, has an annual operating budget of over $56M as well as Capital budgets that exceed $200M, and revenue of $6.6M.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Depending on the role, must be actively pursuing either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related discipline
    • No specific experience required

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Current graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Policy, Parks and Recreation, Library Science, Urban Planning or a related program

    Employment Type: Temporary

    Work Schedule: 40 hours / week, 8:30-5:15 Monday - Friday for 10-12 weeks from mid-May to early August

    Hiring Range: 24.00

    Market Range: 21.78 - 28.03
