    Join the City of Ventura Parks and Recreation team as a Recreation Coordinator! We’re looking for two dynamic individuals to help enrich the community through recreation, parks, and partnerships. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to make a real impact.

    *Please note: this recruitment will be used to fill vacancies over the next year.

    Recreation Coordinator responsibilities for each specialty area may include, but are not limited to:

    Public and Community Art: Coordinates, catalogues, and maintains the City’s municipal and outdoor public art collections including murals, sculptures, and utility boxes; organizes and implements community arts programs, activities, and classes; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers.

    Special Events: Coordinates and maintains the City's special event, film, and block party permit process; communicates policies, procedures, and permit requirements; organizes and facilitates the annual July 4th Parade and Street Fair including the application process, event vendors, and marketing; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; collaborates with community stakeholders.

    Westpark Community Center: Develops, organizes, and implements recreation programs, activities, instructional classes, lessons, clinics, and events. Coordinates and oversees Westpark Community Center operations, including community classes and services such as food distribution. Manages facility rentals; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; oversees independent contract instructor-led programs; and collaborates with community stakeholders and program partners.

    Barranca Vista Center: Coordinates and oversees Barranca Vista Center operations; develops, organizes, and implements classes, camps, and activities; coordinates facility rentals; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; manages independent contract instructor-led programs; collaborates with community stakeholders and program partners including the Ventura Unified School District.

    Senior and Community Services: Coordinates and oversees Ventura Avenue Adult Center operations; organizes and implements grant-funded senior nutrition programs; develops, organizes, and implements classes, activities, events, and services for seniors; manages the city’s community gardens; coordinates facility rentals; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; manages independent contract instructor-led programs; collaborates with program partners including the Ventura Area Agency on Aging.

    Historic Sites and Programs:Coordinates and oversees the city’s historic sites including the Olivas and Ortega Adobes; develops, organizes, and implements historic and cultural classes, programs, tours, and events such as the school-based Interpretive Outreach Program; coordinates facility rentals; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; collaborates with program partners including the Museum of Ventura County and Ventura Unified School District.

    Afterschool and Camp Programs:Develops, organizes, and implements recreation programs, activities, instructional classes, lessons, clinics, and events, including seasonal camps and youth afterschool programs at local school sites. Recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; manages independent contract instructor-led programs; and collaborates with community stakeholders and program partners, including the Ventura Unified School District.

    Sports and Recreation:Develops, organizes, and implements recreation programs, activities, instructional classes, lessons, clinics, and events, including adult sports leagues, fitness classes, tournaments, sailing camps, aquatics programs, and community events. Coordinates and oversees the City’s Community Sailing Center and helps facilitate the City’s sports field allocation process. Recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers while managing independent contract instructor-led programs.

    Experience and Qualifications for Success!

    A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of some college course work in a field related to public administration, recreation, cultural arts, or social services, AND two years of progressively responsible experience implementing services in the social services, senior services, cultural arts, or recreation field; OR in lieu of college coursework, a total of three years of experience as described above.

    Depending upon assignment, the ability to speak Spanish, in addition to English, is desirable.

    License: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver license.

    INTERVIEW DATES AND INFORMATION :

    A select number of candidates will be invited to a qualifying panel interview process. Top candidates from the qualifying interview will be selected for the department final selection interview. Select candidates will be notified of specifics after the filing deadline.

    Completion of an extensive background investigation and a pre-employment medical examination are required before final appointment.

    The Eligibility List established for this classification may be used to fill other regular and temporary vacancies at the discretion of the City.
