POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION POSITION PURPOSE The Sport Coach is a part-time, non-benefited position responsible for coaching a non-competitive intramural sports program representing the City of Westminster and area middle schools. This position helps participants develop their skills in a certain sport and learn the rules of the game. This position serves as a role model and is responsible for developing positive relationships with participants. The Sport Coach focuses on developing a team atmosphere, following the rules of the game and maintaining sportsmanship. This position requires afternoon and early evening work and requires the ability to drive to all participating middle schools as needed. Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of providing quality services and ensuring the safety of program participants.
The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

GENERAL COMPETENCIES Job Specific - Every employee in this position must be able to:- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the sport he or she is coaching
- Train and instruct participants in the skills and game play associated with sport
- Encourage and help participants to learn and improve skills
- Develop positive relationships with participants
- Serve as a role model and maintain professional conduct and sportsmanship at all times
- Work effectively with children ranging in age from 10 years to 15 years old
- Follow City policies and procedures on conduct and safety
- Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations by making proper judgments as to the correct course of action
- Administer first aid and CPR and use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- Work courteously with the public and support the City of Westminster guest service philosophy and the SPIRIT values

JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks 1. Trains and instructs participants in a specific sport
- Monitors activities during training and practices, explains techniques and assists with skills improvement
- Plans work outs and drills to improve and develop skills
- Monitors participants and enforces rules, regulations and safety precautions to prevent accidents
2. Promotes a positive, non-competitive recreation environment, good personal behavior and sportsmanship, and an environment to train and motivate children and adolescents
3. Responsible for team development for Round Robin tournament play
4. Participates in meetings and trainings
5. Keeps track of and ensures proper care of program equipment
6. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Other Duties and Responsibilities 1. Maintains current First Aid, CPR and AED certification
2. Possesses a valid driver's license and maintains a safe driving record
3. Drives a 14-passenger van to local schools
I ncumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications Required :- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license
- Experience coaching a sport or sport instruction
- First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 90 days of hire
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
Physical Requirements This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to:
- Frequently sit, stand and walk through a multi-level facility
- Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
- Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
- Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
- Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
- Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
- Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities
WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in an active gymnasium setting with exposure to loud noises, various sports equipment and activities, and high public use, by lakes and tracks.
Required Materials and Equipment Ensure sport-specific equipment such as volleyball nets, volleyball poles, basketball nets, and balls are in good condition at designated schools. Must carry a first aid kit at all times.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen. There may be additional pre-employment requirements depending on the nature of the position.
