OPEN TO THE PUBLIC This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current/future Park Attendant regular full-time, part-time, and extra help vacancies. The immediate vacancies are for Part-Time and Extra Help positions located at Carbon Canyon Regional Park, O'Neill Regional Park, Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, Mile Square Park, and the OC Zoo
. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

OC PARKS The County of Orange , OC Parks encompasses regional, wilderness and historical facilities, as well as the OC Zoo located inside Irvine Regional Park, and coastal areas throughout the County of Orange in California. OC Parks is a division within OC Community Resources (OCCR) featuring 60,000 acres of parkland, open space, and shoreline. Orange County's award-winning parks and programs are enjoyed by millions of residents and visitors each year, in ways as diverse as the parks themselves.
THE OPPORTUNITY The
Park Attendant under general supervision collects fees from the general public entering the park and assists in the daily operations of the parks. Staff maybe assigned to the Nature or Visitor Center. The
OC Zoo Park Attendant, working under general direction keeps detailed daily records and monitors the interaction between the public and the petting zoo animals to ensure safety. All OC Parks and OC Zoo staff members are committed to providing a high-quality operation of animal care and a pleasant visitor experience.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Welcomes customers of all ages (children and adults) as they enter the park area or the zoo.
- Assists patrons of OC Parks or OC Zoo by answering phone calls and responding to emails.
- Completes check in process for individual andgroup area reservations, campground reservations, Annual Pass sales, and Day Use Tickets on a computerized Point of Sale (POS) system.
- Performs cash/credit payment transactions, cash handling, and managing daily cash income on a POS system.
- Completes deposit reports at the end of shifts.
- Explains directions, provides assistance and information to customers about OC Parks including park rules and regulations or about the animals and the zoo.
- Utilizes 800 MHz radio for daily support functions and assist with emergencies.
- Maintains parks facility including tracking inventory, cleans up the park grounds, waters plants, trees, and performs light gardening, and washing and fueling County of Orange vehicles.
- Assists with interpretive programs, special events, and staff nature center.
- Performs cleaning and monitoring of the petting zoo area to ensure cleanliness.
- Works closely with the public to prevent dangerous items from entering the petting zoo area that may cause harm to the animals (this includes but is not limited to removing old debris and animal stool, replacing bedding, inspecting enclosures, raking, cleaning and disinfecting enrichment toys, cleaning the handwashing station and making repairs as needed).
- Monitors the animals to sense when they may be getting irritated or agitated and moving them for their own safety and the safety of the public.
- Assists in feeding and watering the animals throughout the day.
- Communicates with on-site Park Ranger, Animal Keeper, or facility Supervisor during emergencies, park, or zoo related issues, or if an animal is exhibiting abnormal behaviors or needs medical attention.
These positions are frequently part-time with rotating shifts and locations. They are used at times when large crowds are expected at county parks, such as summers, weekends, nights, and holidays. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES The ideal candidate will be customer service driven with excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively respond to customer questions in a concise and professional manner.
In addition, the ideal candidate will possess knowledge and/or experience in the following core competencies:
Technical Knowledge- Understanding of how to communicate park/zoo rules, regulations, safety policies, and procedures to the park/zoo visitors.
- Ability to apply basic math skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of current computer systems and programs such as Microsoft Office as well as modern office practices and procedures and the operation of office equipment.
- Familiar with how to maintain and manage pertinent information and records by creating documents, spreadsheets, and other related documents needed to keep track of information.
- Ability to use a POS system and cash handling system.
- Ability to control vehicle traffic at entrance/exit of park and foot traffic of those entering and exiting the zoo.
- Knowledge and understanding of how to give directions, direct traffic, and ensure safety of all park/zoo visitors.

- Anticipate and meet customer needs in a variety of situations.
- Establish productive and professional relationships with internal and external customers.
- Ability to explore options and pursues solutions until customers are satisfied.

Environmental and Working Conditions Positions are assigned to both office environment and outdoor settings. Work involves exposure to dust and other allergens. May come in contact with contagious environments, animals and wildlife. Incumbents may be subject to moving objects, vehicles, and intense noise levels. May be required to work under various weather conditions, including rainstorms, and walk in uneven, slippery, and sometimes dangerous terrain.
