JOB SUMMARY JOB SUMMARY Performs a variety of routine library support duties; shelves library materials; assists in maintaining library facilities; provides customer service to the public; assists with library programming and/or book sales; and performs other related duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DECISION MAKING ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs shelving, stack, and reading room maintenance:
- Sorts and shelves library materials in accordance with Dewey Decimal and alphabetic systems; audits shelves for accuracy.
- Dusts and maintains shelves; shifts materials as assigned; does shelf reading.
- Maintains the library reading room; straightens tables and chairs; removes stray paper; puts away materials customers have finished using.
- Provides assistance in updating and maintaining book displays.
- Assists with assembling new shelving units.
Provides customer service to patrons:
- Uses online catalog and knowledge of stacks to help locate library materials for customers.
- Refers more complex questions to other library personnel as necessary.
Conducts a variety of routine library support tasks:
- Checks-in and processes newspapers or other library materials.
- Searches for lost, missing, and overdue materials.
- Pulls materials as required for weeding projects.
- Copies documents; folds and mails publicity materials.
Provides programming and book sale support:
- Sets up tables, chairs, and/or refreshments for library programs.
- Assists with special events as required.
- Packs books for book sales.
- Transports boxes of books to storage.
- Assists in organizing and maintaining supplies and storage rooms.
Assists with opening duties; logs onto public computers; replenishes supplies.
Provides assistance in training and/or supervising the activities of shelving volunteers.
Attends staff meetings and training programs.
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Salary is dependent upon qualifications) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- No experience is required as this is an entry-level position.
CORE COMPETENCIES AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS CORE COMPETENCIES - Must be able to read/comprehend library policies and documentation. Must be able to quickly and accurately place items in complex alpha/numeric order.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are required; must be able to maintain positive working relationships with library personnel, patrons, and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds rarely. Subject to vision constantly; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, hearing and talking frequently; sitting, pushing/pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, climbing and balancing occasionally; crouching rarely.
Working conditions involves occasional exposure to infectious diseases and irate members of the public.

Monday - Friday,
3 hours per day.
