    Overview

    The District Attorney's Office is hiring a Victim Witness Specialist.

    This position will be assigned to work with victims of our Juvenile criminal cases, in addition to Juvenile and Adult Diversion cases. This position is grant-funded, with funding availability for an additional two and a half years. This position is a .75, or 30 hours a week position, with the potential for additional hours.

    Our office is open 8 am to 5 pm, but as a 30-hour-a-week employee, there is some flexibility on what a schedule can be. After a probationary period, an employee may work from home 1 day per week. This position does not require any on-call responsibilities, but after-hours meetings may occasionally be required. It is possible this will become a full-time position in the future.

    Responsibilities

    What you'll be doing:
    • Provides victims of crimes with victim impact statements and advises victims of their right to be heard at court proceedings, sentence hearings, and plea agreement acceptances; composes comprehensive memos that contain victims' recommendations and input.
    • Provides advocacy and crisis intervention for victims of crime.
    • Assesses victim needs and provides referrals and follow-up services to victims, witnesses and their families.
    • Ensures victims are aware of their rights under the Victim Rights Act and Colorado Law.
    • Sets up and participates in meetings with victims as requested.
    • Attends, if needed, any or all stages of the criminal justice process with the victim/witness.
    • Advises victims of the policies and procedures pertaining to criminal protection orders and may advise victims of post sentencing notification rights; provides copies of orders to victim and collateral agencies.
    • Refers victims to collateral agencies including community resources, law enforcement agencies, and legal resources as needed.

    What we're looking for:
    • Organized with a strong attention to detail.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
    • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and prosecution, crisis intervention techniques, and interviewing techniques in a victim/witness program.
    • Record-keeping and reporting procedures.
    • Routine software and business application including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
    • Ability to apply laws and regulations pertaining to victim/witness programs.
    • Knowledge of available community resources.
    • Effectively respond to conflict situations.
    • Provide empathetic support to victims and witnesses and extract pertinent information from interviews and reports.
    • Perform duties independently without close supervision.


    Qualifications

    • Two (2) years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities; public service experience, and experience working with victims and/or witnesses preferred.
    • Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire required.
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred.
