As a Maintenance Worker for the City of Irvine, your contributions directly enhance the safety, functionality, and aesthetic of our public spaces, including streets, parks, facilities, and infrastructure. You will play a crucial role in ensuring our community is well-maintained, safe, and accessible. Your work will include performing essential tasks like litter removal, traffic safety setup, equipment maintenance, and assisting in construction, repair, and electrical work. The current vacancy requires weekends and may require evening shifts.
Your Impact - Perform manual labor in maintenance programs for facilities, streets, and parks, including sign installation, debris removal, and trash bin servicing.
- Clean, disinfect, and stock restrooms in city park facilities; clean parks of litter and debris.
- Maintain and repair playground equipment, picnic tables and shelters, sign, fences and barbeques; maintain, paint, and clean park equipment and amenities, including bleachers, ball courts, drinking fountains, pools, fountains, and ponds.
- Set up traffic safety devices and barricades for work sites and events, ensuring public and worker safety.
- Observe safe work methods, policies and procedures and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
- Drive City vehicle between work sites, maintain vehicle, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition and ensure equipment is secure at the close of each workday.
- Perform basic cleaning and upkeep of the Fleet Services shop and associated equipment, as applicable.
- Assist with answering inquiries and concerns from the public.
- Operate small equipment such as weed eaters, brush cutting tractors, tractors and related equipment.
- Perform basic construction and repair tasks on streets, sidewalks, curbs, and storm drains.
- Assist with asphalt and concrete maintenance; demolish and prepare areas to be resurfaced; seal cracks and apply applicable chemicals; rake, compact, and pave surfaces using a variety of asphalt materials; assist with forming and pouring sidewalks, accessiblity ramps, curbs, and gutters.
- Prepare equipment and supplies as needed and load trucks.
- Operate warehouse equipment, including forklift and hand truck.
- Perform marking or delineation of areas proposed for planned excavations as part of the City's DigAlert program.
- Use a jackhammer and sledgehammer to break and remove asphalt and concrete; shovel and rake dirt, gravel and asphalt; dig holes and backfill; clean and sweep work areas.
- Run conduit, pull wires, pull cable wires, fire alarm installation, install receptacles, switches, and lighting.
- Cut and bend, run conduit and wires, install electrical equipment, breaker boxes, outlets, switches and lights.
- Assist the electrician with various duties, including bending EMT pipe, pulling new wire in new installation, and reading blueprints.
- Experience in using hand tools specifically designed for electrical related work.
- Disassemble faulty electrical equipment and replace parts equipment using hand tools.
- Complete various tasks that include bending, threading, and running EMT and Rigid conduit.
- Use several methods/materials for painting such as roller brushes, spray machines, ladders, water and oil base paints.

- Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods of troubleshooting for construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems, welding, and cabinetry.
- Knowledge of the basic principles, practices, and safety techniques related to transporting and/or towing vehicles/equipment.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as regulations, blueprints, electrical diagrams, time sheets and general operating manuals.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent and two years of construction, roadway repair, landscape, or facilities/building maintenance/repair experience or related field, or any combination of education and experience the provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A valid California driver's license is required.
