    What You'll Be Doing

    The Housing Department is recruiting for a Homeless and Prevention Services Division Director. The Homeless and Prevention Services (HPS) Division Director plays an integral role in the community’s effort to prevent and end homeless. This position will coordinate with other divisions in the Housing Department, as well as external partners, to ensure homelessness is rare, brief and non-recurring.

    The HPS Division operates one of the largest emergency shelters for men experiencing homelessness in the state. It also manages all community contracts with homeless service providers through the nationally recognized Bridge to Home program and operates the flagship “Wake Prevent!” program.

    The Division Director ensures the administration and compliance for Federal grant and locally funded programs focused on homeless and housing services which serve the most vulnerable and lowest income households who are at-risk or experiencing homelessness.

    The HPS Division Director will work through staff and partners to construct comprehensive engagement, education, support services and affordable housing strategies.

    Wake County Department of Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization’s goal is to ensure that quality affordable housing is available for all Wake County residents. This Department comprises of five divisions: Equitable Housing & Community Development; Homeless & Prevention Services; Research, Data & Systems; Permanent Housing & Support Services; and Veteran Services. As the population and economy continue to grow in Wake County, the need for affordable housing development and preservation increases. Not only do more units of affordable housing need to be built, housing services must be provided to support families and individuals to access or maintain safe, decent, affordable housing.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Health or related field
    • Six years of clinical operations management experience including at least two years of supervisory experience
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Increasing experience of five or more years in implementing housing and homeless programs
    • Understanding of the housing first model, trauma-informed care, tenancy supports and care coordination


    How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

    • Detailed understanding and knowledge of systems affecting homelessness and strategies to serve highly vulnerable populations
    • Ability to provide effective division leadership, establishing work expectations and monitoring staff performance
    • Excellent speaking, listening and written communication skills, ability to negotiate complex service contracts and facilitate the implementation of new or reimagined programs
    • Demonstrated ability to lead others with a willingness to examine relevant viewpoints and explores alternative approaches
    • Critical problem solving and analytical thinking skills to identify program needs and propose viable solutions
    • Manage several priorities simultaneously, as well as establish and meet deadlines
    • Ability to build solid cross-functional relationships internally and externally to identify and maintain partnerships
    • Ability to take prompt, proactive action to accomplish objectives and to act to achieve goals beyond what is required
    • Provides excellent customer service in all interactions, including the ability to make decisions without regard to that personal prejudices, biases and experiences
    • Demonstrated ability to work within program budgets and finances including innovative strategies to weave funding streams together to increase community impact

    Emergency Service Worker Statement
