    Public Safety Call Taker is the entry point into a rewarding career in Public Safety Dispatch. With opportunities for future advancement into the Public Safety Dispatcher series of classes, Public Safety Call Taker candidates will receive on the job training and experience in the fundamentals of public safety response. Under supervision, the Public Safety Call Taker receives incoming 9-1-1 and non-emergency telephone calls and evaluates requests for services within a regional, multi-jurisdictional emergency communications center. Public Safety Call Takers process requests for services in a timely and appropriate manner using a variety of communication and computer systems.

    In anticipation of opportunities in the Public Safety Dispatch Department, this recruitment will establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

    Examples of Essential Functions

    • Receive, evaluate and prioritize emergency and non-emergency police, fire, medical and rescue calls for service; elicit essential incident information from callers and determine the nature, location and pertinent details of incidents.
    • Operate a variety of emergency dispatch and communications equipment including a Next Generation E911 (NG911) telephony system, a Public Safety Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, tape recording equipment and general office equipment.
    • Coordinate the receipt of both emergency and non-emergency calls and relay information and assistance with other law enforcement, fire, medical, and other emergency response agencies.
    • Evaluate the nature and severity of the calling party’s situation to assist in determining call priority and necessary, responding equipment.
    • Retrieve and enter information from local, state and federal computer networks regarding wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles and other related information.
    • Answer routine inquiries and refer callers not requiring dispatches to appropriate departments and agencies.
    • Maintain accurate and complete logs and records of all activities and calls that are received.
    • Perform a variety of functions related to public safety dispatch operations.
    • Perform related duties as required.


    Minimum Qualifications

    The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
    Education:
    • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
    Experience:
    • No experience is required. One year of experience in customer service involving direct contact with the public is desirable.

    • The City of Reno Public Safety Call Takers are the life line that connects the community to emergency and public safety services
    • This position requires assisting callers who are victims, survivors and witnesses of all types of emergency situations and crime, while obtaining and entering essential information regarding emergency situations.
    • This position is privy to highly confidential emergency situations and details, helping both emergency callers and public safety/emergency personnel as situations are happening and must remain calm, focused, organized, and able to recall information instantly and keep everyone informed of activities at all times.
    • Situations that Call Takers deal with over the phone can be exciting, challenging, violent, alarming, distressing, filled with emotion, conflict, anger, happiness and relief all the while under emergency circumstances and deadlines.
    • This position requires working varying shifts, weekends and/or holidays year round with accompanying overtime.

    Examination Process:
    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of a performance evaluation that will include modules on typing, data entry, decision-making, and other related areas weighted at 100%.

    Online Assessment Details:
    Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the online assessments once the recruitment has closed. These tests will be self-administered with no proctor, which means candidates will be able to complete them online at their convenience during the designated testing window.

    Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
    In the event of tie scores resulting from an open competitive examination (Rule VII, Section 7), candidates will be provided a rank preference in the following order:

    Classified employees with established veteran status Classified employees without veteran status Non-classified employees and external candidates with established veteran status.

    This preference will only be administered in the event of tie scores. Documentation must be submitted at the time of application.

    Appointment and Certification:
    Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
