    Job Summary

    ******Mohave County is currently recruiting for Sergeant in Kingman, Arizona******

    Performs first line supervisory work involved in various sheriffs' office functions.

    REPORTS TO
    Work is performed under general supervision of assigned higher level of authority.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED

    Directly exercises immediate to general supervision over an assigned staff of Deputy Sheriff's and/or support personnel.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Patrol squad providing field patrol services on a 24-hour basis in a geographic sector of the county (including waterways).
    • Traffic enforcement providing traffic patrol for enforcement of traffic codes, insuring safe and orderly flow of traffic, responding to vehicles requiring road service and investigating of vehicular accidents in the county.
    • Detective squad involved in the investigation of crimes against property such as burglary, larceny and auto theft, or against persons such as assaults, sex crimes and homicides and to include the process of collecting, preserving and processing of evidence.
    • Special programs and support units including preparation of projected budget and grant requests, maintaining personnel records, scheduling assignments and developing training and operational procedures.
    • Developed and implementing community relations and crime prevention programs including the preparation of media materials, public presentations, and responding to public requests for information.
    • Specialty areas, i.e., Search and Rescue, Diving Team, Waterways, Civil and Narcotics.
    • Special investigations involving illegal drug activities, organized crime, embezzlement or theft of county funds or materials and the provision of security for county and visiting officials and dignitaries.
    • Section activities related to juvenile services including investigations of child abuse and neglect, and the prevention and investigation of illegal activities involving juveniles.
    • Reviews and evaluates operations performance of assigned area.
    • Assists in the planning and development of future programs in the assigned area including the development of training and evaluation aspects of the program.
    • Receives complaints or reports of emergencies. Determines need for law enforcement action.
    • Serves as back up to Deputy Sheriffs in the field and performs related Deputy Sheriff duties and responsibilities in all facets of duties and responsibilities.
    • Conducts investigations of citizen complaints against sheriff personnel and other internal investigations as directed by the immediate supervisor, Chief Deputy and Sheriff.
    • Supervises, coordinates and performs a variety of administrative work such as scheduling, maintaining records, responding to request for information or services, responding to news media, investigating field problems, performing related administrative, planning and research activities, and preparing communications, statistical information and briefing and budget materials.
    • Presents testimony in court and presents legally obtained evidence.
    • Assists in and coordinates activities and programs with other sheriff office units and other law enforcement and public agencies.
    • Represents the department, as required, in meeting with various individuals and groups.
    • May serve as a training officer.
    • Recruitment, leadership and supervision of departmental volunteers such as Search and Rescue, Posse volunteers and Boating Safety Officers.
    • Conduct in-service continued or specialty training.
    • Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School diploma /GED.
    • Three (3) years successful experience as a Deputy Sheriff or related law enforcement officer.
    • Supplemented by college level course work in Criminal Justice, Business or Public Administration or related field
    • OR any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.
    PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENT
    Associates Degree Criminal Justice, Business or Public Administration or related field.

    SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT
    • Must pass drug screen post offer.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.
    • Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
    • Requires certification as a law enforcement officer by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ POST).
    • May be required to successfully complete physical agility testing, written examination, oral board interview, polygraph examination, background examination, psychological examination, final administrative interview and other testing appropriate to law enforcement individuals.


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Knowledge of:
    • Law enforcement investigative techniques.
    • Relevant laws, rules and regulations pertaining to law enforcement.
    • Department policies, rules, regulations, procedures and unit functions.
    • Criminal codes, ordinances, rules of evidence and legal rights of citizens.
    • Law enforcement equipment care and use.
    • First aid methods and procedures.
    • Law enforcement principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment.
    • Law enforcement and public relations activities.
    • County geography, its incorporated areas and including highways, street and road locations and problem areas.
    • Legal and court procedures.
    • Principles and practices of leadership, supervision and training.
    • One or more of the general or specialized areas of patrol, investigation, administration, technical, public relations, traffic enforcement, polygraph examination or specialized support functions.
    • Mohave County Personnel Policies and Procedures and Department Regulations.

    Skill in:
    • The safe and effective operation and maintenance of law enforcement equipment to include firearms.
    • The safe operation and handling of a motor vehicle in adverse traffic conditions, weather, terrain and high-speed driving.
    • Communicating and maintaining professionalism with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.

    Ability to:
    • Organize, assign, coordinate, train, supervise and evaluate work activities and to persuade and control assigned personnel effectively.
    • Exercise judgment in relating to people and in responding to changing situations.
    • Enforce and explain laws, ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact, impartiality and discretion.
    • Respond to emergency situations rapidly with due regard for the safety of the public and assigned personnel involved and protection of rights and property.

    • Apply law enforcement investigative techniques.
    • Gather evidence and prepare cases sufficient to secure issuance of criminal complaint.
    • Demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice and desire to help when dealing with people.
    • Retain control of a vehicle under emergency conditions.
    • Prepare and maintain accurate, complete and legible reports and to present detailed, accurate and objective oral statements and responses to questions.
    • Maintain proficiency in the use of firearms.
    • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with associate personnel, personnel of other law enforcement agencies and county and city departments, and with officials and the public.
    • Perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without a reasonable accommodation.
