An island community rich in history and opportunity, Galveston is the ideal place to live, work and raise a family!Job DescriptionSUMMARY: Under general supervision, a Senior Crew Leader (Refuse Truck Operator) operates a rear-end sanitation truck to provide commercial and residential solid waste sanitation services within the City; provides work direction to assigned laborers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Conducts pre-trip inspections of the sanitation vehicle to ensure safe operating condition.
- Performs post-trip activities, including vehicle washing.
- Collects solid waste along an assigned route.
- Performs beach cleanup as assigned.
- Provides work direction to work crews assigned to a route.
- Prepares activity reports regarding sanitation route operations.
- Interacts with other route drivers as necessary; shares or receives various information.
- Provides assistance to customers as needed.
- Participates in special event operations.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High school diploma or equivalent; AND one year of experience in sanitation route operations, including six months of lead work or supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: - Possession of a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May have exposure to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
