    Job Summary

    The Low Voltage Electrician, assigned to the Utilities Shop within the Energy, Utilities & Sustainability unit of Facilities Development & Operations works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Utilities Shop Supervisor. The Low Voltage Electrician performs a full range of skilled journey- level electrical and related work including the installation, maintenance, modification, troubleshooting and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems and is responsible for a full range of journey-level skilled work in fire alarm, sub-metering and access/security systems (i.e. keyless entry, intrusion/panic alarms) to ensure a clean, safe, attractive and well-maintained campus environment.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Reviews work order system to understand and complete assigned preventative, deferred, and reactive maintenance work efforts in a manner aligned with the priorities communicated by the appropriate administrator
    • Ensures assigned preventative maintenance and other work orders designated as high priority are completed on schedule
    • Installs, maintains, inspects, modifies, remodels, and repairs low voltage electrical systems and equipment
    • Inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, tests and repairs low voltage electrical systems and equipment
    • Assembles, installs, and repairs low voltage electrical assemblages in fire alarm, security & panic alarm and sub-metering systems
    • Makes low voltage electrical connections
    • Wires, tests, and troubleshoots low voltage communications infrastructure
    • Assists and coordinates the work flow for assigned work including project planning and coordinating with other shops where necessary.
    • Provides rough sketches/diagrams and corresponding cost estimates and projected schedules to the Utilities Operations Supervisor for communication with the Appropriate Administrator, FD&O Business & Administrative Services unit, and customer
    • Upon assignment, inspects work performed by contractors
    • Coordinates with others and follows adopted procedures concerning the procurement and disposition of necessary supplies, materials and equipment to carry out adopted work plans and schedules. Ensures adequate stocks of consumables are on hand
    • Ensures all work efforts are properly and accurately tracked in the computerized maintenance management systems including technician notes, labor and material resources utilized, schedule, and other documentation required to substantiate the work effort
    • Unlocks and secures facility areas to access equipment, items to be repaired and/or maintained
    • Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as lead and asbestos. Performs abatement, where certified
    • Provides on-the-job support and instruction to less skilled workers in trade and safety practices
    • Coordinates and integrates efforts of area of assignment as necessary to appropriately to respond to emergencies
    • Responds promptly to, and assists with urgent needs in order to prevent injury, damage, or further incident
    • Assists with campus emergency response efforts in the area of assignment including work performed after hours or on weekends


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems, and to prepare standard reports
    • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants
    • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
    • Ability to use considerable judgment and discretion in performing duties required to successfully complete work assignments
    • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position, and to perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
    • Ability to organize assigned work and carry forward assignments based on operational priorities as defined by the appropriate administrator and/or operating guidelines with a focus on efficiently performing duties required to complete assignments successfully and within given deadlines
    • Ability to implement a customer (constituent) service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards and to present work to a wide variety of audiences
    • Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate and perform assigned work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved
    • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization as well as those outside of the organization who are directly or indirectly involved with projects and/or assignments. Includes ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
    • Ability to perform strenuous work in potentially hazardous environments
    • Must be able to work evening, weekend, or holiday hours when requested to attend to campus business needs or respond to emergencies
    • Ability to recognize and accommodate changing priorities; meet deadlines/goals; and complete routine tasks despite intermittent interruptions. This includes managing multiple tasks and working proactively to avoid crisis and backlog
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere while establishing effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds
    • Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economic justice, social justice, environmental justice) into all aspects of performing job duties


    Required Qualifications
    • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard 8000 hour (4 year) electrician’s apprenticeship program
    • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations
    • Requires the possession of a valid California Driver’s License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation


    License

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Possession of CA Department of Industrial Relations Fire Alarm Technician Certification
    • Possession of a NICET I minimum certification
    • Possession of a NICET II minimum certification
    • Preferred factory training on Simplex and/or Siemens Fire Alarm Systems, S2 Access Control Systems, and intrusion detection and access control systems with free-standing multi zone DACT dialers
    • Weekly Fire pump test certificate from Office of State Fire Marshal
    • Experience with server-based account management and control systems such as SIS Alarm Center, S2 Enterprise Systems, Genetec VMS system or similar


    Compensation

    Classification: Electrician
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,889/month - $7,457/month
    CSU Salary Range: $5,998/month - $8,737/month
