PARKS DIVISION The El Dorado County Parks Division is responsible for private boater education and monitoring and regulating commercial activity on the South Fork of the American River. The County's goals are to preserve the river corridor's environmental resources; protect the area's rural character; reduce conflicts between residents and boaters; and maintain a quality whitewater boating experience.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Under general supervision, manages commercial and non-commercial whitewater recreation to protect the safety, health, and welfare of river users and to protect the riparian environment and riparian landowners and helps implement requirements as outlined by the County’s River Management Plan; and performs related work as required.
The selected candidates will have the opportunity to: - Conduct on-river services utilizing kayaks and rafts.
- Coordinate emergency evacuations with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department.
- Provide non-commercial boater information and education at river access points: river maps, safety/interpretive brochures, and river and educational information.
- Coordinate the annual volunteer river clean-up.
- Monitor existing resource conditions including river use levels; water quality issues; safety and education issues; facilities and services in the river corridor.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE An ideal candidate will have experience and the ability to operate a whitewater craft (such as hard-shell kayak, stand up paddle board, or raft) at a minimum of Class III level; the skills and knowledge of whitewater guiding, safety practices, and boater responsibility code; and the ability to collect data and maintain records. The candidate is expected to be a good communicator and work well the public, be a team player, and be adaptive and versatile to a dynamic work environment.
Human Resources will assess your application to determine if you are minimally qualified using the following recommendations:
Six (6) months of experience in any of the following areas: park guiding, whitewater boating, recreation, outdoor education, tourism, volunteer work through community-based organizations or National/State Service programs, or participation in/coaching athletic teams (high school, college, club, or recreational).
ORPossess a valid Swift Water Rescue Training certification, completion of a whitewater guide school within the last two years, or American Canoe Association (ACA) Instructor certification.
Licenses and Certifications: - Must possess and maintain a California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving history as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Applicants must either hold a valid Swift Water Rescue Training certification or successfully complete the training after hire.
- Applicants must either hold valid First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications or successfully complete the training after hire.
- Possession of a valid California Boater Card is desirable.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The County of El Dorado is recruiting applicants for River Instructor - Extra Help. This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future extra help vacancies for at least three (3) months. In accordance with Personnel Rules 1103.1 and 1105.1, an extra help or limited term employee may be transitioned into a regular employee if the department in which the employee works has a vacant allocated position for the same classification as held by the extra help or limited term employee and the appointing authority requests such transfer.

Extra help vacancies are made to maintain adequate coverage of work for short periods of time at frequent intervals, where employment is of a recurrent nature depending on the needs of the Agency; work may be seasonal, on-call, and/or for a limited duration. Extra help employees are not considered regular employees, therefore do not attain civil service status, and do not receive benefits or paid leaves; however, they do accrue sick leave consistent with the law.
