  • Job Description

    Full-time Position available with the Aviation Department, Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport located at 900 NW Richards Rd.
    Salary Range: $22.61-$34.48/hour
    Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m., *Mandatory overtime during inclement weather and emergencies.

    Responsibilities

    • Assists in the maintenance of the Downtown Airport properties utilizing knowledge of various trades necessary to maintain the safety and efficiency of operations of the airport.
    • Responsible for the construction, alterations, inspections, maintenance, and repair of structural and mechanical components, electrical systems, general infrastructure, and automotive equipment comprising City-owned airport property at a municipal airport to include a two story office building, 96 hangars and various other structures, an aircraft self-fuel facility, airfield, parking lot, and street lighting systems, service roads, flood control levee, drainage systems, and runways and taxiways utilized for approximately 100,000 annual aircraft operations.
    • Inspects, maintains, and repairs airfield, pavement, structures, systems, infrastructure, and grounds of the airport.
    • Performs duties related to new construction and general carpentry work; remodeling to include framing, drywall, trim, painting, and electrical rough-in and finish, installation of fixtures and devices as well as minor plumbing repair, electrical, voice and data wiring; masonry, concrete and asphalt crack sealing, patching, and repair, concrete flatwork, repair of stone or block walls; fence and sign installation and repair; minor electrical and locksmith repairs.
    • Performs daily inspections, maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of all machinery, equipment, and tools used in airport maintenance; small engine repair to include generators, jackhammers, and chain saws; grounds maintenance to include licensed chemical spraying, and mowing.
    • Operates, maintains, and repairs variety of heavy snow removal equipment, motorized construction and raised platform equipment, and farm implements such as front end loaders, skid loaders, backhoes, boom lifts, dump trucks, heavy duty airfield plow trucks, large farm tractors, and towed equipment to include 20' rotary mowers, and the necessary maintenance of proper fluid levels, sharpening of blades, and replacement of parts prone to wear such as tires, snow blades and broom cores.
    • Leads a small group of semi-skilled or unskilled workers as necessary, to be able to work independently of direct supervision as required, and to perform a substantial amount of manual labor and assignments that progressively increase in complexity.
    • Ability to stand/kneel/walk for extended periods of time, repeatedly lift 50-pound objects, and to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Position is subject to call-in or overtime after normal work hours at any time due to operational needs including emergency snow removal mandatory shifts of up to 12 hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.



    Qualifications

    REQUIRES 2 years of experience as a skilled worker in building and mechanical repair work in a relevant trade (HVAC, boilers, hydraulics, pumps and motors etc.). An additional related technical education certificate or diploma may be substituted for one year experience. Must possess a valid State -issued driver's license in accordance with the City of KCMO policies. May be required to obtain a valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Class A, B, or C issued by the State of Missouri prior to the end of the employee's probationary period.(Appropriate CDL will be determined by the department). Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer physical examination as prescribed by the City.

Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
    For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
    Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

    If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
