    THE POSITION

    To plan, assign, supervise, and participate in custodial and maintenance work at City buildings and facilities.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    A Custodial Supervisor is distinguished from a Senior Custodian in that the Supervisor exercises independent judgment and initiative in planning and coordinating the work of custodial crews or individual custodians. The Senior Custodian participates as a custodial crew leader.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

    General supervision is provided by higher level departmental personnel. Responsibilities include the direct supervision of lower level custodial and maintenance personnel.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    TYPICAL DUTIES

    - Plan, assign, supervise, inspect, and evaluate the work of custodians engaged in such tasks as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing stripping, waxing, and polishing floors; shampooing and steam cleaning rugs and carpets; cleaning restrooms; emptying waste receptacles; dusting and polishing furniture; washing windows; assembling, disassembling, and moving furniture; sweeping and washing outside walkways and entrances to facilities; and keeping buildings, equipment, and premises in a clean and orderly condition.
    - Participate in cleaning and maintenance activities.
    - Perform, assign, or recommend necessary repairs to buildings and equipment.
    - Maintain comfortable temperature within buildings and make routine adjustments to heating and air conditioning equipment; request major repairs to heating and air conditioning systems.
    - Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in maintaining and cleaning buildings and equipment.
    - Monitor the locking and unlocking of building doors.
    - Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies; order necessary custodial equipment and supplies.
    - Monitor the replacement of light bulbs and restroom supplies.
    - Keep written records of work performed and materials used.
    - Prepare written reports and correspondence.
    - Supervise, train, evaluate, and discipline subordinate employees.
    - Prepare work schedules for custodial crews; monitor number of hours worked and tasks performed by subordinates.
    - Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    - Materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in cleaning and maintaining buildings.
    - Care and basic repair of custodial equipment.
    - Cleaning solvents, soaps, waxes, and other related chemicals used in custodial work.
    - Use and purpose of common hand and power tools used in custodial and building maintenance work.
    - Arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
    - Basic safety rules.
    - Principles of supervision, training, evaluation, discipline, and office department rules.

    Ability to:

    - Train and evaluate subordinates in proper custodial methods and maintenance work.
    - Read, comprehend, and convey information contained in custodial equipment operations manuals and on custodial chemical labels.
    - Perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
    - Keep written records and prepare necessary reports.
    - Follow written and oral instructions.
    - Perform basic arithmetic computations.
    - Work independently without immediate supervision.
    - Read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
    - Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

    Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    Three years of experience in performing custodial and maintenance work within a building, preferably including at least one year of lead experience.

    PROOF OF EDUCATION

    Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment . Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.

    An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

    SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Driver License:

    A valid California Class C Driver license is required for appointment to this classification and must be maintained in order to continue employment in the classification. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

    2. Training and Experience Exam : (Weighted 100%) - The questions located at the end of the application are the Training and Experience (T&E) Exam. Responses to the T&E questions will be rated and scored. This exam will evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of a candidate's education, training and experience. The exam score will determine your ranking on the eligible list for this job. When completing the T&E questions, please note:

    • Responses to the T&E questions must be submitted online; paper questionnaires will not be accepted.


    • A resume will not substitute for the information required in the T&E questions.


    3. Eligibility : Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Custodial Supervisor examination.

    4. Screening Committee : (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department.

    5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.

This Charter Amendment also established the Mayor's position as a full-time job.
