    This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and any future vacancies within the Tulare County Fire Department. The anticipated life of the employment list is six months. If interested in employment for this position for current or future vacancies, please submit an online application for consideration.

    Current vacancies are with the Tulare County Fire Department located in various locations throughout Tulare County. The anticipated life of the list is six months.

    Applications will be reviewed by Tulare County Human Resources & Development. As extra help positions become available, County departments with the job openings select the most qualified and appropriate applicant for the position available. The number of hours and duration of employment varies by each assignment. Extra help employees may work in a variety of County departments in locations throughout the geographic county area.

    Extra help employees may not work more than 1,559 hours in any fiscal year from July to June. An extra help employee who mistakenly works in excess of 1,559 hours in a fiscal year does not become a probationary or regular employee. Applications will be active for six months. If you are hired for extra help and you complete a work assignment and then you if you wish to be employed again, you must resubmit an Extra Help application online.     Typical Duties

    Assist in firefighting functions in the suppression of wildland fires and other emergency responses; operate and maintain a variety of equipment; perform a variety of heavy manual labor related to maintenance, construction, clean up, and/or other related areas; use a variety of hand and power tools in performing duties; engage in fire prevention activities including construction and maintenance of fuel breaks, roads, and trails; perform in fireline construction including shoveling, raking, pruning, chainsaw work and/or other related activities; respond to alarms as a member of a fire suppression crew, and enters burning areas; participate in regular training activities, and fire prevention activities; participate in building, grounds and equipment maintenance; inspects, cleans and repairs related equipment; perform minor construction work; performs general housekeeping duties in fire station.

    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

    Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

    Experience: Experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age

    Knowledge of: Basic maintenance principles; basic mathematical concepts; applicable tools and equipment; safe work practices.

    Skill/Ability to : Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers; operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment; learn firefighting and other emergency techniques primarily through the methods of discussion and through observing the task performed; perform manual labor; use applicable tools, and equipment; operate construction equipment; perform basic mathematical calculations; operate fire and other emergency apparatus and equipment effectively and safely; follow directions and orders of supervisors quickly in emergency situations; follow policies, procedures, laws and ordinances pertaining to fire suppression and prevention work; demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; carry out a conditioning program to maintain good fitness.

    License or Certificate

    Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.

    DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    License or Certificate:

    • Possession of an S130 Firefighter Training Certificate

    • Possession of an S190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Certificate

    • Possession of an S212 Wildland Fire Chain Saws Certificate

    • AHA or ARC Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid

    Additional Information

    Conditions of Employment:
    Candidates selected will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions. An Employment Eligibility Verification using E-Verify may be required on the first day of employment for some positions. Some job classes may also require a physical exam.
