    The Legal Secretary I/II performs administrative secretarial, and clerical work for an attorney or department head and to perform legal processing tasks. In this position you will assist in the preparation and maintenance of calendars and schedules, perform routine or moderately complex legal processing tasks in assigned area of law. You will also prepare affidavits, complaints, warrants, judicial orders, abstracts of judgments, subpoenas, and other documents.

    The ideal candidate for this position is a self-starter, has the ability to work independently, strong personal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

    This recruitment is being conducted to fill one full-time vacancy which may be filled as a Legal Secretary I or Legal Secretary II level depending on qualifications in the District Attorney's Office. Bilingual Spanish skills are preferred but not required. The list established by this recruitment may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, limited term, and extra help vacancies for up to one year.

    Scheduled salary increases and Winter Time Off (WTO):

    • 3.5% COLA increase effective 7/01/25
    • 3.5% COLA increase effective 7/01/26
    • 32.0 hours of paid Winter Time Off (WTO)

    EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Legal Secretary I ($29.61 - $ 35.12 /hour):

    Experience: One year of directly related legal clerical or secretarial experience
    Education:Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized legal clerical training.

    Legal Secretary II ($ 32.27 - $ 38.23 /hour)

    Experience:Three years of significant, directly related and progressive legal secretarial experience.
    Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized legal clerical training. College level legal administrative course work is preferred.

    License or Certificate*: Certain positions assigned to this class may require possession of a valid California Driver's License.

    *Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

    Supplemental questions will be scored by the subject matter experts. The most qualified applicants from the scoring of the supplemental questions will be invited for an Oral Panel Interview.
    Oral Panel Interview Week of January 20, 2025
    The most qualified candidates from the interview process will be placed on the eligibility list and may be considered for current and future vacancies for this position for up to one year.

    SALARY -
    Salaries are based on a five-step range. Appointments are usually made at the beginning step with advances occurring at six months and the completion of each year thereafter. Salary rates are reviewed annually.
