This position directly supervises a combination of areas which serve to directly support the laboratory’s ability to provide accurate, efficient and timely results to our submitters. This includes laboratory shipping and receiving, central accessioning, laboratory warehouse/inventory, sterilization/decontamination, laboratory facility management (BSL3 operations), and bio/chemical waste handling. An ideal applicant for this job will have the ability to look beyond the current workflow for different areas under their supervision and use input from their staff as well as the rest of the laboratory to execute their tasks to best of their ability.
- A person selected for this position may be expected to perform any or all of the following tasks:
- Assure that laboratory support functions such as sample accessioning, specimen kit building and distribution, sample shipment, sterilization and warehouse functions are properly fulfilled and managed.
- Provide daily supervision, performance evaluation, coaching and professional development for the Laboratory Support Staff who handle the laboratory support functions listed above.
- Provide general oversight of the laboratory statewide courier system.
- Oversee contract and preventative maintenance on laboratory wide equipment (autoclave, centrifuges, balances, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, etc.) coordinate scheduling with service providers and laboratory personnel.
- Specifically monitor location, reassignment and final disposal of all laboratory equipment that is considered a fixed
- asset.
- Assure for the proper hazardous waste collection, disposal and reporting. Ensure compliance of Small Quantity
- Generator permit. Provide oversight of warehouse supply and inventory. Be the chairperson for the Hazardous Waste committee.
- Oversee building facility and maintenance and operations, working closely with Office of Administration facility staff to maintain laboratory services (FMDC work orders, cleaning staff, etc.). This includes oversight of annual HEPA filter certification and needed replacement. Coordinate removal of used filters with the Laboratory Safety officer. This also includes organizing the pest management quarterly meeting for building inspection.
- Assist with the development of the budget for expenses within their area. Work closely with the fiscal unit in
- contracting and purchasing in a timely manner staying within the department fiscal constraints.
- Maintain biannual certification in hazardous materials and dangerous goods shipping. Obtain select agent certification.
Minimum Qualifications: - 5-7 years of relevant experience and 2-4 years of supervisory experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
Preferred Qualifications: - BS or BA in biological, physical, chemical or clinical laboratory science.
