DescriptionVacancies are within the Department of Sports and Recreation. Under direction, provides a wide variety of recreational services for a geographic area or district. Assists the Community Recreation Counselor in coordination, planning, conducting and administration of recreational activities, including directing and supervising subordinate personnel at various work sites ; Assumes full responsibility for the coordination, planning and conduct of programs and/or activities during the absence of the Community Recreation Counselor or at their direction; Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with community groups, agencies and individuals to ensure participation and support for recreational programs; Assists in performing continual evaluations of the district programs by meeting with citizen groups, maintaining and monitoring systems and recommending changes to meet specific community recreation goals and objectives for different programs and activities; Gives advice to groups, agencies and institutions concerning the planning and conduct of recreational programs; Meets with public and private agencies, neighborhood and activity interest groups to plan and coordinate programs which meet neighborhood and/or district recreational needs; Contacts private agencies and institutions to identify resources which can be mobilized to meet specific needs; Publicizes programs and activities by using personal appearances at community meetings, the media and other available resources. Performs related work as required.
This is a part-time HMEA union position.
Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination will be designed to measure:
Knowledge of: - Theory and philosophy of recreation and its application to individual and group behavior;
- The wide variety of recreational interests and activities in a community.
Ability to: - Incorporate various recreational interests into a recreation program for all ages;
- Cooperate with and interpret recreation to leaders in government and citizen groups;
- Stimulate interest and obtain the support of community leaders in a recreation program;
- Plan, assign and supervise the work of various recreation personnel and to coordinate the recreation activities of a number of playgrounds and recreation centers;
- Train subordinate personnel in new developments and methods in recreation work;
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants and the general public;
- Train volunteers in organizing and conducting recreational activities;
- Develop and administer a budget for programs on a geographic or community basis;
- Inform, activate and involve a combined private and public recreation service system which is responsive to citizen needs and concerns;
- Express oneself clearly orally and in writing.
QualificationsOpen to all applicants who meet the following qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, social work or a closely related field
AND at least one (1) year of experience in community work requiring direct responsibility in organizing and coordinating a delivery system in recreation, social youth or family services.
