County of Orange THE OPPORTUNITY We are seeking experienced individuals who have extensive technical expertise working on air conditioning systems. Air Conditioning Mechanics are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing various types of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment; installing and maintaining heating and ventilating duct systems; and performing maintenance, repair, and calibration on heating and air conditioning control devices.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will demonstrate the related experience and knowledge required for this position. They will possess a minimum of two (2) years of HVAC experience. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following competencies:
Technical Expertise - Install, maintain, and repair various types of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems.
- Lay out, install, and maintain heating and ventilating duct systems.
- Maintain and repair steam and water boilers.
- Repair and replace control valves.
- Complete scheduled inspections of all equipment, and check pressure valves, and belts.
- Maintain records of inspections and work performed.
- Clean coils, and oils fans, change filters, and adjust airflow.
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills - Troubleshoot units not functioning properly and repair or replace defective or worn parts; diagnose problems and repair pneumatic and electronic control systems.
- Determine parts and equipment needed for maintenance and repair work and submit job estimates.
- Review operational charts on boilers and air conditioning equipment to determine efficient operation or significant deviations from normal.
Communication Skills - Accurately and concisely exchanges information with others, both orally and in writing.
- Effectively follows written and oral instructions and is able to give instructions to others.
- Actively listens to others for a full understanding of what is being communicated.
- Comprehends and interprets technical material related to the job.
- Records project information to ensure accurate reporting.
Safety Conscious - Ability to engage in safe work practices.
- Ability to comply with all applicable regulations and safety procedures regarding the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning/HVAC systems.

REQUIRED LICENSE Possession of a Universal Technician certificate as required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act for dealing with refrigerants. As well as possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher by date of appointment.

Written Examination | Multiple Choice Test
(Refer / Non-Refer): A multiple-choice assessment will be conducted to evaluate the applicant's knowledge and experience as it relates to the job. Only the most successful candidates will be referred to the Oral Practical Exam.
Performance Examination/ Structured Oral Interview | Performance Test/ Structured Oral Interview (Weighted 100%)
Candidates will be evaluated based on practical job exercises designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job . After the performance examination is complete, c andidates will be interviewed and evaluated by a panel of job knowledge experts
Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedure listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure. Eligible List Once all assessments have been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS Physical and Mental Requirements Continuous upward and downward flexion of the neck. Frequent walking, standing, bending and twisting of neck; bending and twisting of waist; squatting, simple grasping, and reaching above and below shoulder level. Occasional sitting and repetitive use of hands to operate computers, printers, and copiers. Incumbents use physical strength and agility on a continual basis, including lifting objects frequently weighing up to 50 pounds, and, on occasion, required to assist in lifting and transporting objects weighing up to 70 lbs.
Environmental and Working Conditions Exposure to all types of weather, including extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Constant exposure to aircraft noise, high-pitched noises, fumes and odors, and other airport-related conditions.
