ABOUT THE JOB:
This position is responsible for providing assistance and supervision to assigned personnel on matters concerning enforcement of state criminal laws, traffic laws, administrative rules and county ordinances.
Key Responsibilities:- Supervising daily activities and checking reports submitted for accuracy and content, and approving or rejecting them.
- Monitoring, inspecting, and being accountable for the appearance, morale, public image, and performance of subordinates.
- Making recommendations on personnel actions and receiving grievances.
- Planning and supervising the deployment of adequate personnel and equipment.
- Maintaining complete records of assigned shift activities.
- Observing, supervising and instructing deputies in the enforcement of state laws, administrative rules, and county ordinances, the prevention of crime and the protection of life and property.
- Providing training and development for all staff members; monitoring the adherence to Sheriff's Office policies and procedures and taking action as necessary.
- Reviewing and investigating complaints.
- Must be able to physically perform the duties of a Deputy Sheriff. Perform other related duties as assigned.
What You Will Bring: Knowledge of or experience with:
- All phases of police work including principles and practices of modern crime prevention, investigation, criminal identification, apprehension, rules of evidence, traffic control and safety, care and custody of prisoners, record keeping, and law enforcement administration.
- Proficiency in record and case management.
- Review a multitude of information related to criminal incident, identify the key elements, and develop a case which can be successfully prosecuted.
- Use good judgment and make decisions in stressful situations, and to analyze and adapt to new situations quickly.
- Plan, organize and work independently and in a team environment.
- Operate assigned firearms and equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Constitutional and statutory laws governing law enforcement, the geography of the county and the location of private and public commerce activities.

Skill to:- Plan and carry out the administrative and technical programs, projects, and work assignments.

- Assume the duties and responsibilities of other administrative members in their absence (Lieutenant, as assigned).
- Evaluate assigned employees on job performance and review all personnel performance evaluations from assigned division.
- Identification and preservation of physical evidence.
- Understand rights of suspects and defendants.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with other county officials, state and federal officials, social agencies and community members in an effort to meet the goals and objectives of the Sheriff’s Office.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office selection process for this classification includes the following components:
1. Application submission to Deschutes County.
2. Application pre-screening review and selection by Deschutes County.
3. Criminal Background Check.
4. Applicants who pass the prescreen will be invited to participate in the testing process.
5. Interview(s).

7. Passing Fitness Evaluation.

Application Selection Process:Candidates are required to meet certain standards to be considered for hire by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office including the ability to maintain physical and mental capabilities to complete required job tasks.
The selection process includes a thorough examination of the application form attachments, and supplemental responses. The application review will be used to assess each candidate's ability to follow instructions and give complete and consistent information in written form . Upon completion of each hiring process phase above (5-11), applicants will be notified of their status via email.
Compensation$8,265.83 - $11,077.00 for 173.33 hours/month assignment.
$8,704.56 - $11,664.94 for 182.53 hours/month assignment.
Monthly salary is dependent upon any combination of 8, 10, or 12 hour shifts; Flexibility with scheduling is based on assignment and the operational needs of the Sheriff’s Office.

Minimum QualificationsMust possess or be able to obtain an Advanced Certificate from the Oregon Department of Public Standards and Training (DPSST) within one (1) year of hire/appointment date. Must possess or be able to obtain a DPSST Supervisory Certificate within (2) two years of hire/appointment date.

Necessary Special RequirementsDriving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
A successful candidate will complete a full background investigation prior to receiving a conditional job offer. The psychological and medical evaluations will require completion after the conditional job offer.
Must pass a pre-qualifying driving record review and criminal history background. - A current driver's license and the state of origin are required. Candidates who wish to be considered for this position must include an accurate driver's license number and state of origin on their application under the Personal Information section.
Background Investigation.- A successful candidate will complete a full background investigation prior to receiving a conditional job offer. The psychological and medical evaluations will require completion after the conditional job offer.
