The City of Tacoma Environmental Services Department, Solid Waste Management Division, is seeking a skilled Solid Waste Mechanic to join our collaborative team and provide exceptional service at the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center. This position includes various skilled maintenance, preventive maintenance and repair duties for the garbage processing and solid waste compacting facilities. This includes performing complex maintenance and repair work independently or with assistance of assigned personnel. This position may also be required to provide technical work direction and guidance to assigned maintenance workers.

QualificationsAn equivalent combination to: Graduation from high school including training in the maintenance trades and two (2) years' experience in the operations, maintenance and repair of mechanical and hydraulic systems.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS- Valid Washington State Driver’s License at time of appointment, with maintenance thereafter
- Obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within probationary period, with maintenance thereafter.
- Completion of Welder I Training or equivalent welding training program within 12 months of appointment into the classification
- Obtain man-lift and forklift training certification; CPR and First Aid training within probationary period, with maintenance thereafter
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including a respirator and heavy gloves
DESIRED EXPERIENCE Experience with solid waste compacting, garbage processing, welding and/or related equipment preferred.
Knowledge & Skills- Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in solid waste compacting equipment maintenance, repair, removal and installation.
- Safety techniques, testing methods and procedures associated with working with dangerous or hazardous gases, solid waste and confined spaces.
- Basic principles and procedures of mechanical, plumbing and electrical repair.
- Basic principles of the skilled maintenance trades.
- Safety techniques, testing methods and procedures associated with working with dangerous or hazardous gases, solid waste and confined spaces.
- Record-keeping techniques.
- Tools, materials and procedures used for welding, fabrication, construction and repair of metal objects
- Perform skilled maintenance and repair work for recovery and transfer center and solid waste compacting facilities using a variety of hand and power tools and test equipment.
- Read and interpret meters.
- Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Learn to apply safety and health procedures related to recovery and transfer center and solid waste compacting facilities.
- Meet schedules and timelines.
- Operate forklifts, man lifts, City vehicles and other equipment.
- Inspect equipment, diagnose problems and correct as needed.
