Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience* in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying; law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR
One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR
An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college-level coursework; OR
Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years of experience as a trade assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

Duties Description
Under the supervision of the Park Manager or their designee, the incumbent will perform or assist with maintenance and repair tasks. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment including trucks, refuse packers, tractors, mowers, power saws, and self-propelled equipment.
• Load and unload cargo from vehicles and storage areas; perform building, road, and grounds maintenance as well as restroom cleaning activities.
• Operate large dump trucks, large front-end loaders, bucket trucks and plow trucks.
• Perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities in a variety of trades such as carpentry tasks (minor wood replacement and building repairs), plumbing tasks (faucet changing and bathroom winterizing), electrical tasks (changing switches and light fixtures, light bulbs, and breakers), masonry tasks (pouring sidewalks and pads), and mechanical repairs (oil changes, sharpening blades, replacing belts and hoses).
• Perform skilled maintenance activities under supervision or after receiving detailed instructions.
• Assist in repairing paths, picnic tables, benches, trails, and park equipment.
• Assist with tree pruning and removal which includes the operation of chain saws, aerial lifts, and chippers.
• Complete snow removal by shoveling snow and operating plow vehicles in the winter months.
• Assist in emergency situations by applying emergency practice and procedures, assisting and directing staff; and assisting with traffic control and parking vehicles.
• Assign, supervise, review, train and evaluate work of subordinate employees.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner under stressful conditions.
• This position involves performing medium to heavy physical labor as well as working from heights and ladders.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must be able to work a variable schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class B* Commercial Driver’s License with applicable endorsements or be able to obtain it within the probationary period and maintain continuously thereafter as a term and condition of employment.***
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete Game of Logging or Parks approved chainsaw operator course within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to communicate in writing and to read and comprehend written material.
***Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Location Pay:
The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($41,399) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($50,884) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400).
