SUMMARY DESCRIPTION Under general direction, the Park Ranger Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the operations and visitor engagement within City parks and recreational facilities. This role is responsible for supervising Park Rangers, ensuring visitor safety, promoting environmental education, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere and is responsible for the day-to-day operation and supervision of employees within the assigned unit. The incumbent collaborates with internal departments and external partners to enhance park experiences and services.
We currently have one vacancy in the Parks and Recreation Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

Examples of Essential Functions- Plan, prioritize, assign, and supervise the work of Park Rangers responsible for park operations and visitor engagement.
- Train and mentor staff in outdoor education, interpretive programs, first aid, safety standards, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Evaluate staff performance, provide feedback, and implement improvement plans as necessary.
- Participate in the recruitment, selection, motivation, and evaluation of Park Ranger staff.
- Work with employees to correct deficiencies and implement disciplinary procedures as needed.
- Patrol Park areas to promote an orderly and friendly atmosphere among visitors and resolve issues.
- Identify safety hazards within the parks and develop plans to mitigate risks.
- Train staff in safety procedures and implement interventions to enhance visitor and staff safety.
- Issue warnings and citations for non-compliance with park regulations and City ordinances.
- Coordinate with law enforcement agencies as needed to address security concerns and ensure compliance. Communicate safety plans and updates to internal stakeholders and the public as necessary.
- Plan and coordinate special events and community activities with a focus on safety and visitor experience.
- Collaborate with staff to implement safety protocols and emergency response plans for events.
- Communicate with internal departments and external partners to ensure smooth and safe execution of events.
- Interpret natural and historical features of park areas to visitors, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the environment.
- Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and service requests, providing courteous and effective solutions.
- Offer resources and outreach to park visitors, including assistance to homeless individuals.
- Develop and distribute educational materials and information about park programs and events.
- Assist in developing policies, handbooks, and training guidelines for Park Rangers and park operations.
- Provide technical training related to laws, regulations, and processes relevant to park administration.
- Prepare written and oral reports as needed, including daily patrol logs, incident, injury, vehicle accident, general accident reports, safety assessments, maintenance observation reports, or other required reports as necessary.
- Participate in the preparation and administration of the park operations budget; submit budget recommendations and monitor expenditures.
- Ensures a safe environment is maintained at respective City facilities and open space areas.
- Report and address incidents of vandalism and graffiti.
- Work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and nights, on a rotating schedule.
- Perform related duties as required.
Minimum QualificationsThe following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
Work Experience:- Four years of experience in park management, recreation programming, or a related field, including one year of administrative or supervisory experience in law enforcement, public safety, security or recreation.
Licenses and Certifications: - Valid driver’s license.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification

Examination Process:

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:On promotional examinations (Rule VIII, Section 9), in the event of tie scores resulting from final rating, including seniority points, a classified employee will be awarded veteran's preference and provided a rank preference if one (1) of the eligibles has submitted proof of honorable discharge from the military service. This preference will only be administered in the event of tie scores. Documentation must be submitted at the time of application.
Seniority Points:Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:
The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.
Rule VIII - Promotion, Section 9. Seniority Credit.
Appointment and Certification:Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
