  • Job Description

    The Community Development Department is seeking a dynamic and customer-focused Planning Technician. The position is part of the Planning Division, and supports the division with a variety of technical planning work and administrative support functions. Collaboration and communication are critical job skills for the Planning Technician position. Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and paraprofessional duties in support of the Community Development Department, primarily related to land use regulations and policies; assists the public at the counter and provides them with technical information related to the issuance of permit applications, including the process and any related fees; checks plans; reviews materials prior to submittal to ensure comprehensive and accurate submittals; uses specialized database and permit tracking management programs; prepares materials for community meeting presentations; conducts research related to planning efforts; and performs related work as required.

    The Community Development department is responsible for ensuring a sustainable and vibrant community that supports a high quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors. It includes the Building, Planning and Housing divisions, and core services include building permits, plan check, inspections, affordable housing administration and housing initiatives, as well as long-range planning and development review.

    Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate must master complex regulations and relay them to the public clearly and succinctly. The candidate must be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a timely manner, and quickly read and interpret project plans and associated technical reports. In addition to the core job tasks of reviewing building permit applications for zoning compliance, assisting at the public information counter, serving as a Planning Commission Clerk, and coordinating Planning application submittals, the Planning Technician may be called upon for special projects, including detailed permit/parcel research and mapping (GIS) analyses, preparation of graphics and other diagrams, and participation at community events.     Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in urban planning, or a closely related field.
    • Experience in municipal planning or related field is highly desirable.

    An Eligible List will be established as a result of this examination process and will be valid for a period of six (6) months. The list may be extended up to a maximum of two (2) years. The hiring department will review the Eligible List to determine which candidates will be invited to the department selection process.

    Menlo Park was founded November 23, 1927, as a general law city under the State of California and operates under the council-manager form of government.     City Council


    The City Council is the City's five-member governing body whose members serve at-large for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The City Council selects from among its members, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem to one-year terms at its first meeting in December of each year. The Mayor, who represents the City of Menlo Park, serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and signs enacting ordinances and contracts. The Menlo Park City Council meetings are generally Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers located at 701 Laurel Street.
