DescriptionVacancy is in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program in the Health and Human Services Department. Under direction, to plan, develop, implement and evaluate the nutrition and breastfeeding education program for WIC clinics and participants. Directs, supervises and reviews the activities of other Nutritionist, Senior Nutrition Aides, Nutrition Aides and clerical personnel in the Nutrition Unit. Interacts with the State Health Services WIC Program Nutrition Coordinator on program development. Interviews clients for the purpose of collecting information and data from them to assess their needs. Makes referrals to other agencies. Maintains detailed records and compiles statistics and reports. Communicates changes in WIC policies to clinics and participating physicians and interacts with them regarding clients’ medical welfare. Acts for WIC Public Health Program Manager in his/her absence. Conducts nutrition education programs in the community with community agencies and community groups. Develops an annual nutrition education plan in compliance with Federal and State regulations and guidelines. Assures proper certification of eligible applicants. Prescribes appropriate food packages for program participants. Performs related work as required.
This is a HMEA union position. The hours of work are 40 per week and the above salary includes 5% in lieu of overtime.
This is a grant-funded position renewable on an annual basis. The City of Hartford is not obligated to fund this position upon termination of funding. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and may include a written test, an oral test, a performance test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination is designed to measure the:
Knowledge of:- Principles and practices of maternal and child nutrition.
- Social and welfare agencies, institutions, clinics and cooperating agencies in the community.
- Various ethnic food preferences and habits in the community.
Ability to:- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, clients, outside agencies, and the general public.
- Plan, develop, implement and evaluate a nutrition education program.
QualificationsOpen to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:Master’s Degree from an accredited institution with coursework in nutritional sciences, diabetics, public health, nutrition, or home economics with a major emphasis in foods and nutrition or related field
and two (2) years of full-time work experience in nutrition, in a health agency or health facility,
and one (1) year of which must be in a supervisory capacity.
