Fresno County Department of Public Health has an exciting career opportunity for individuals interested in an
Environmental Health Specialist Trainee position. Incumbents in this classification receive training in and learn how to conduct inspections, investigations, and evaluations of environmental health conditions within Fresno County.
Environmental Health Specialist Trainee is the pre-entry level classification and permanent status cannot be obtained in this classification. Additionally, incumbents must obtain certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist and advance to the Environmental Health Specialist I classification within three (3) years from the date of initial employment as required by the State of California, Health and Safety Code Section 106625, or separate from County service. This three (3) year period includes any time employed as an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee with other Agencies.

Please note : The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions as vacancies occur. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Please click here to review the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Minimum Qualifications Education : Possession of a bachelor's degree that is acceptable to the State of California, Department of Public Health for certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
A current evaluation letter from the State of California, Department of Public Health, stating that the education qualifications specified in the State of California, Health and Safety Code Sections 106660 and 106635 have been met.

License : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.
Note : Permanent status may not be obtained in this classification. Pursuant to California Health and Safety Code Section 106625, incumbents may not exceed three (3) years as a Trainee. Incumbents must obtain registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health, and advance to the Environmental Health Specialist I classification within three (3) years from the date of initial employment or be separated from County Service. Any time employed as an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee with other Agencies will be counted towards the three (3) year period.

SELECTION PROCESS :Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:

- Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
