    Job Description

    The Lineworker Instructor conducts a wide range of high voltage, electric power line technician training courses as well as general and technical safety classes for the Electrical Power Program. Through hands-on classroom and field training, the Instructor utilizes skill and knowledge of adult learning theories and learning styles to maximize learner success and ensure overall effectiveness of the course instruction. Uses a variety of media to present course material to lead participants to succeed in completing course objectives. Builds positive customer relationships to promote and build the program.

    This position reports to the Training Coordinator.

    Required Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Four years of experience as a journeyman level lineman to include experience in a live (i.e., high voltage) environment using both live line tools and rubber gloving techniques.
    • One year of adult education or training experience, which may include on-the-job training.


    Required Licenses/Certifications:
    • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Crew/work leader or working in a safety training position for an electrical utility.
    • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Electrical Systems Technologies or other related field.
    • Valid Class A or B CDL.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to climb utility poles using proper equipment.
    • Must be able to lift and/or move light, moderate, and heavy objects.
    • Ability to perform lifesaving rescue by lifting victim from utility pole & lowering to ground using both the bucket and pole top rescue techniques.
    • Ability to remain stationary for long periods at a time as needed for travel.
    • Ability to operate standard office equipment including Computer/keyboard/telephone.
    • Ability to use/operate hand and power tools.
    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
    • Ability to work in adverse outdoor conditions during field instruction.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Skilled in most aspects of electric power distribution system construction and maintenance in both an aerial and underground environment.
    • Skilled working aloft from wooden structures and aerial devices.
    • Familiarity with pole climbing assist equipment, buck squeeze or like equipment.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Strong presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively with a broad group of learners.
    • Ability to adapt training methods to diverse learning styles.


    Equipment:
    • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone.
    • Aerial devices, digger derricks, electric transmission and distribution tools and equipment.


    Notifications:
    • This position is security sensitive.
    • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
    • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.
    • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.
    • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.
    • This position allows telecommuting per TEEX guidelines.
    • This a wage position established to accommodate a temporary organizational need. As such, TEEX does not guarantee any set number of hours or length of employment in this role.


    Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

    Course Instruction - 75%
    • Instructs Electric Power classes as assigned on the course schedule.
    • Arrives before the course is scheduled to begin.
    • Performs classroom and field instruction by course need.
    • Follows approved curriculum course outline and timelines.
    • Performs all course exercises as explained by Instructor Guide.
    • Ensures all participants have achieved the terminal objects of the course.


    Course Materials Development/Updates - 10%
    • Develops/updates course materials under the guidance of an associate training specialist as directed for review by training coordinator.
    • Actively reviews and participates in suggesting changes to the course curriculum to the associate training specialist or training coordinator.
    • Reviews new and revises instructional materials as they become available to determine relevance with current courses.


    Reporting - 5%
    • Turns in all required reports in a timely manner.
    • Submits travel forms and receipts to the business office within 1 week after trip.
    • Submits Workday Timesheet by the assigned due date.


    Customer Relations - 5%
    • Builds customer relationships and promotes the program.
    • Contacts customer before the beginning of the course to ensure all logistics are finalized.
    • Forwards all leads to appropriate divisional personnel.
    • Actively markets divisional and agency courses to course participants and customers.


    Teamwork - 5%
    • Promotes teamwork within the program.
    • Positively interact with fellow staff members.
    • Actively participant in team meetings and events.
    • Assists new instructors to ensure successful acclimation to the team.


    Other Duties:
    • Participates in a minimum of 8 hours of professional development activities specifically targeted at improving instructional techniques (not subject matter) per year.
    • Follows all dress codes associated with specific work activity (ie. Travel, workshop, in office, etc).
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
