    Position Description

    The Fresno Police Department is currently recruiting for individuals who have the energy level and commitment to be part of a vigorous law enforcement agency. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to encompass a high level of commitment to public service. The Police Cadet I is a training class which provides individuals with a variety of law enforcement experience. Incumbents perform assignments involving the delivery of non-emergency police services, traffic and parking control, completing related paperwork, identification of persons through fingerprints and answering and evaluating calls for emergency and police services. Incumbents may be assigned to any shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.

    This is a training class in which incumbents do not achieve permanent status in the classified service as defined in the Fresno Municipal Code Section 3-202(p)(5). Qualifying incumbents are expected to obtain full-time permanent employment within the Fresno Police Department within 4 years (48 months). Failure to do so is cause for termination from the program as outlined in F.M.C. Section 3-266.

    The Requirements

    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination.

    Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; must be at least 18 years of age on or before administration of the first step of the examination process; and possess a valid California Driver's License at time of application. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.

    Must successfully complete a polygraph test or computer voice stress analyzer test and an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

    Selection Process

    The examination process may consist of the following:

    ORAL EXAMINATION - 100%: An oral examination will be administered by a panel of officers. The panel of subject matter experts will evaluate a candidate's training, experience, and personal traits for the position of Police Cadet. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the panel interview to qualify for the eligible list. The oral examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 25, 2024.

    A candidate's final score and placement on the eligible list will be determined by the passing score of the panel interview.

    Eligibles certified to the Police Department for consideration must successfully complete a polygraph test, or computer voice stress analyzer test, extensive background investigation, and police department interview before receiving a conditional offer of employment.

    Please note: any person who fails any part of the process, including but not limited to, oral examination/panel interview, polygraph test or computer voice stress analyzer test, psychological examination, medical examination, or background investigation, may not reapply for Police Cadet I for a minimum of 180 days from date of notification of failed component.

    Veteran Preference Regulations

    Qualified veterans who pass the examination may obtain five (5) additional points.
    Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested.

    City Government

    Fresno is a full-service charter city operating under a strong mayor form of government. There are seven Council Members. The Council appoints the City Attorney and the City Clerk. The Mayor is elected at- large and does not serve on the Council, but has veto power over certain actions taken by the City Council. The City Manager, who is appointed by the Mayor, is responsible for appointing all other department heads in the City
