    This is a Part Time, Non Permanent Position.

    The Community & Library Services Department is seeking a part-time driver for our Senior Services division. The IDEAL CANDIDATE has strong communication and interpersonal skills. The incumbent will have the ability to relate to a diverse group of people. Shifts are typically between the hours of 7 AM and 4 PM, with occasional Saturday or evenings required for special events or trainings. The ideal candidate would be available to work at least two days a week.

    Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 - June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice. Further restrictions apply to CalPERS Retired Annuitants.

    Examples of Essential Duties

    • Delivers demand responsive transportation services to ensure timely, efficient and safe customer service.
    • Drives various routes using guidance and direction from Senior Services Transportation Coordinator.
    • Completes necessary reports
    • Provides safe and efficient services needed to facilitate orderly movement of passengers.
    • Transports seniors to medical and non-medical appointments and to the Senior Center in Central Park lunch, activities, and classes offered by city vehicle.
    • May assist clients and mobility devices with boarding and exiting the vehicle.
    • Performs routine vehicle checks and maintenance.
    • Keeps records and makes reports as required
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    The preceding duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of works performed within this job assignment. The City, at its discretion, may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of: City and departmental policies and procedures; City geography; transportation routes; safe driving practices; California Vehicle Code; vehicle preventative maintenance; customer service methods and practices; senior program services; Mobile Data Terminals and GPS used for drivers manifests and communication.

    Ability to: Operate a motor vehicle and drive in a safe and efficient manner; read and follow street maps and GPS; plan and adhere to route schedules; exercise good judgement and take effective action in responding to emergency situations; safely lift and move heavy objects; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively with clients, volunteers and staff; willingness and patience to work with older adults and persons with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate effectively with others; and deliver quality customer service; properly secure mobility devices such as wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, and personal shopping carts.

    Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent and some college or vocational education or equivalent work experience .

    License: Must have a valid California Class C Driver's License at the time of appointment.
    Employees regularly assigned/required to drive a city or personal vehicle in the course and scope of work shall be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice program due to the performance of field duties that may require operation of a City vehicle.

    Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all Huntington Beach city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.

    The SALARY RANGE is composed of seven steps. Merit step increases are based on satisfactory performance.

    PROMOTIONS within the City are based upon the merit system principles emphasizing individual ability and utilizing competitive examinations.

The City has a world-class library located within the 365-acre Central Park as well as four additional branch libraries. In addition, Orange Coast College; the University of California, Irvine; and California State Universities at Long Beach and Fullerton are located in close proximity.

    There are over 117,000 households within a five-mile radius of the Huntington Beach Civic Center. The average family household income is $122,851, ranking one of the highest in the nation based on the top 100 largest cities in the country.

    THE CITY GOVERNMENT

    Founded in the late 1880s, Huntington Beach was incorporated as a Charter City in 1909. Huntington Beach has a City Council/ City Manager form of government. The City Council has seven members who are elected at large, on a non-partisan basis, to four-year overlapping terms. City Council members are limited to two consecutive 4-year terms. There are three elected department heads - the City Attorney, City Clerk and City Treasurer. The position of Mayor is filled on a rotating basis.
