    THE POSITION

    Deputy Sheriff's provide services and protection to the public through performance of law enforcement duties. Incumbents are responsible for enforcing laws and preventing crime.

    Deputy Sheriff's serve in numerous assignments including, patrol, investigations, marine patrol, coroner's office, civil, and resident deputy. In addition to ancillary assignments such as Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), Arson Investigations, Mobile Field Force (MFF), HAZMAT Response, and specialty instructor.

    The Sheriff's Office provides a variety of schedules depending on operational need and assignment. The current options include:
    • (5), 8-hour shift(s)
    • (4), 10-hour shift(s)
    • (3-4), 12-hour shift(s)
    The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.

    Essential Duties

    Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:

    1. Attends the P.O.S.T. Academy to receive training in all aspects of full peace officer law enforcement work; receives on-the-job training in departmental rules, regulations, policies and practices; works with an experienced Deputy Sheriff to become familiar with all aspects of the work.

    2. Patrols an assigned geographical area in an unincorporated region of the County; observes activities in the area; responds to emergencies and reports of crimes in progress; interviews persons to obtain information or assess service needs; investigates complaints, makes arrests and issues citations; attends briefings to keep updated on activity.

    3. Patrols County waterways in a boat; assists boaters/swimmers needing help; investigates suspicious activity to prevent crimes such as illegal drug sales; assists accident victims; searches for missing persons believed to be in the water; maintains an orderly vessel; transports boats on trailers; coordinates activities with other agencies.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    Satisfactory completion of California Basic P.O.S.T Law Enforcement Academy within the last three years.

    SELECTION PROCESS

    Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination . Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicant’s ability to advance in the process; as such, responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses.     A minimum score of 70% is required to continue in the selection process, unless otherwise announced.

    DOCUMENT SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS
    A California Basic P.O.S.T. Law Enforcement Academy Certificate is required for this position. However, the County will accept letters from Academy staff confirming that the candidate is currently enrolled in an Academy program and in good standing. The letter should indicate the start date and the expected Academy graduation date. All candidates must complete the Academy as part of the hiring process and be awarded their Basic P.O.S.T. Law Enforcement Academy Certificate. Failure to submit the certificate or letter at the time application is submitted will result in immediate disqualification from the recruitment.

    Supplemental Information

    VETERANS PREFERENCE POINTS

    To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE (GENERALLY COPY 4), MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BY THE FINAL FILING DATE. Applicants who have a service-connected disability must also submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service-connected reasons.

    Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under conditions discharge shall receive five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans rated at not less than 30% disability shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran’s preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
