The City of Sunnyvale is seeking qualified, self-motivated individuals interested in working with young children in a part-time preschool environment. Ages range from 3 to 5 years. The program goals include: teaching children to listen and react, to follow directions, to learn to take turns and share, to build self-confidence, to become aware of the world and think creatively, to make new friends, and to understand basic academic principles, like recognizing shapes, colors, the alphabet, and numbers. Staff will work in teams of two and share duties.
Essential Job FunctionsPreschool Assistant(may include, but are not limited to the following:)
- Planning the day's activities, including crafts
- Assist in the arrangement and selection of special activities, events, and guest speakers.
- Request, maintain and organize supplies.
- Lead songs, games, crafts, activities, and stories
- Communicate with children, parents, volunteers and supervisor.
- Direct behavior and maintain order in class;
- Help children understand patience, and learn to delay satisfaction and deal with conflict;
- Teach socialization skills including sharing, manners and taking turns;
- Maintain a clean, safe environment.
Preschool TeacherAll essential job functions of a Preschool Assistant plus the following:
- Co-teach with another Teacher in absence of Head Teacher
Preschool Head TeacherAll essential job functions of a Preschool Teacher plus the following:
- Serve as Site Lead for the assigned classroom.
- Supervise Preschool Staff and Preschool Instructors working in their assigned classroom.
- Research, prepare and submit supply orders in timely manner;
- Manage and maintain classroom supplies, equipment and furniture.
- Prepare staff schedules and assist with identifying subs as needed.
- Lead curriculum planning meetings with other preschool staff and mentor staff on curriculum preparation
- Prepare class calendars for parents.
- Prepare and maintain class documentation.
- Ensure staff adhere to cleaning schedule.
- Assist Coordinator with leading teacher learning day meetings.
Minimum QualificationsPreschool Assistant - Must be at least 18 years old and possess a HS diploma or GED;
- 2 years or 2 summers experience working with young children;
- Able to walk, run, dance, lift, crawl and have energy to keep up with a group of small children and lift up to 10 lbs.
- Be reliable, positive, patient, understanding and caring with children;
- Be flexible and able to respond to change;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Project a positive, professional image;
- Good organization skills, a self-starter with problem solving skills and able to complete assignments on time;
- Has or able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience in a classroom setting desirable.
Preschool Teacher All minimum qualifications of a Preschool Assistant plus the following:
- 12 ECE (Early Childhood Education) units;
- At least one year or summer of experience working in a classroom setting.
Preschool Head Teacher All minimum qualifications of a Preschool Teacher plus the following:
- At least two years of experience working with children in a classroom setting.
- 6 additional Early Childhood Education units (plus 12 ECE units required for preschool Teacher totaling 18 ECE units)
- 2 ECE units of adult supervision and/or 24 total units desirable
Licenses/CertificatesPossession at time of hire and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record.
