Examples Of DutiesThis position coordinates the District Health Services program under the direction of the administrator; promotes, in compliance with District policy, the optimal health services plan for the District to support the overall implementation of program goals; assists the administrator in performing administrative health service duties for the department; supports best practice standards in the District Health Services program for students and staff; provides support to the health services staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Coordinates the daily activities of the Health Services Program; oversees deployment of health services staff, as directed; provides a coordinated school health service delivery model, thereby creating a safe and healthy school environment.
2. Assists with articulating program goals, strategies and objectives to District staff, District families, and the community to strengthen effectiveness of the program; assists with crisis in communicable disease; ensures adherence to District policies and state/federal requirements.
3. Assists the administrator in the development of objectives, standards, and procedures in the school health program and in planning, implementing, and evaluating health services to be provided in each school.
4. Participates in the review and revision of board policies and procedures affecting student health services, when necessary; reviews procedural manuals for health services staff; assists the administrator in the review of the School Nurse Manual, policies and procedures, and care guidelines.
5. Oversees the development, revision and submission of timely reports and forms to meet state-mandated health care reporting requirements.
6. Assists the administrator in budget development; researches and participates in revenue generating opportunities; supports the federal, state, local and private grant programming to ensure compliance with application rules and regulations and to maintain the fidelity of the programming.
7. Assists the administrator with recruiting and interviewing new nursing staff prospects; supports the orientation of new staff to District Health Services and health services staff; assists with securing and formulating nursing and student health contracts; supports administrator assignments of mentors for new nurses.
8. Assists the administrator in establishing professional development priorities and implementation of the agreed-upon annual plan for RNs, LPNs, and Health Clerks to gain proficiency in all areas of school nurse and health services staff practices.
9. Coordinates and facilitates, per direction of administrator, in- service training and workshops to provide continual staff development opportunities for health services staff; may collaborate with the Professional Development office for provision of ongoing training.
10. Facilitates communication between health services staff and other stakeholders in the welfare of students.
OTHER JOB DUTIES 1. Maintains and updates knowledge and skills required for success in the position by participating in professional development as needed or as assigned.
2. Performs related duties as assigned by Administrator of Health Services, on a temporary basis.
3. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.
CONDITIONS Experiences frequent interruptions; may be required to work with and, if appropriate, defuse sensitive and difficult situations and/or people; may be exposed to infectious diseases; required to travel between schools; may be required to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, run, twist, climb, and/or be mobile to possibly attend to ill or injured students; may be required to lift, carry, and position ill and injured students.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Education, Public Health Administration, Health Education, or related field, from an accredited college or university; Washington State Registered Nurse license, preferred; two to four years’ experience in health administration; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.
Licenses/Special Requirements
First aid and CPR certificates prior to starting employment.
Valid Washington State driver’s license and access to personal transportation.
Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.
Must maintain all licenses and certifications as a condition of continued employment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws applicable to healthcare and nursing.
Knowledge of Tacoma Public School board policy and procedure, 504 accommodation requirements, and Special Education requirements.
Knowledge of Public School Nursing.
Knowledge of OSPI guidelines that provides for appropriate care to children and how it relates to school nurses in Washington.
Knowledge of current healthcare strategies and interventions for school-age youth.
Knowledge of current health issues affecting an urban community and public schools.
Knowledge of basic first aid and health care practices and procedures, basic symptoms of communicable and other childhood diseases.
