ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Road Maintenance Division within the Department of Public Works, has six ( 6 ) openings. There are currently six (6) (75 hours bi-weekly) Road Maintenance Worker I positions available. The Road Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and construction of over 400 miles of road. The Division operates two corporation yards, one in Nicasio and the other at the Civic Center in San Rafael. A sign shop is located in the Nicasio yard. The Division maintains 1,016 road segments totaling 846 lane miles, some of which traverse State Parks, National Parks, and National Monuments.
Working in teams, Road Maintenance Workers perform a variety of road maintenance work, including pothole or plant mix patching, seal coating, ditch and culvert cleaning, tree trimming, sign maintenance and installation, truck driving, and other manual labor tasks.
Road Maintenance Worker I is an entry level position and as incumbents gain more experience, they may advance to the Road Maintenance Worker II level. Operation of trucks and related light equipment is required. In addition, Road Maintenance Workers are required to work in a wide variety of weather conditions and must be willing to work on-call and in emergency situations as needed. Workers must also be willing to wear a County provided a uniform.
ABOUT YOUOur Highly Qualified Candidate: The highly qualified candidate has personal and professional integrity, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, an enthusiastic approach, and is committed to positive customer service. They are highly organized, willing to learn new methods and techniques, and enjoy working in a team environment.
The highly qualified candidate has a wide range of experience and knowledge related to construction tools and maintenance procedures including but not limited to: excavation and compaction equipment, saws (chain and pole), pruners, underground construction, and asphalt and seal placement. They have directly related experience working around heavy construction and maintenance operations involving live traffic control (flagging).
The ideal candidate will possess a valid Class A driver’s license and an ATSSA and/or MUTCD approved Flagger Certification.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: - Seal coating, pothole and plant mix patching, tree trimming, cat tracking, striping, and other road maintenance techniques.
- Tools and equipment used in road maintenance such as rakes, rollers, shovels, picks, jack hammers, electric drills, and general carpentry tools, air compressor and pneumatic air tools, tampers, breaking guns and concrete saws.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in performing road maintenance work.
- Repair and maintenance materials such as soils, sand, gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials.
Ability to: - Perform street maintenance and repair as part of work crew.
- Use hand tools and equipment to break and remove pavements and to dig, shovel and haul operating related tools and equipment.
- Drive dump trucks and/or operate front end loaders.
- Perform sustained heavy physical labor.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons encountered during the performance of job duties.
- Work within a team of several Road Maintenance Workers to accomplish the assigned job in the most efficient manner.
- Share knowledge and abilities with team members and train and guide other workers as required.
- Perform the assigned work safely in accordance with occupational hazards and safety standards.
- On-Call Availability: Must be available to be on-call 24/7 to respond to emergency road maintenance needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSESRoad Maintenance Worker IAny combination of education and training which would provide the knowledge and abilities to perform as a Road Maintenance Worker I. A typical way of obtaining the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities is any related formal or informal training which would provide the ability to perform the listed duties and must be available to be on call 24/7 to respond to road maintenance needs.
Certificates and Licenses Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles is required at the entry level. Probationary employees must obtain a California Class A driver's license prior to the end of a one-year probationary period.
