    Assistant Water/Wastewater Operations Manager - Civil Engineer

    PAY RANGE: $68,640 to $83,787

Join us as the Assistant Water/Wastewater Operations Manager and play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of water and wastewater systems within the City of Olathe’s Environmental Services Division. In this dynamic position, you’ll work closely with a team of professionals to optimize treatment processes, contribute to key maintenance projects, and collaborate with City project managers on capital improvements. You'll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working toward your Professional Engineer (PE) licensure under the mentorship of a PE.

    The Civil Engineer II manages design and construction of projects within an assigned focus area which can include Water, Sanitary Sewer, Street Preservation and Reconstruction, Transportation or Stormwater. The Civile Engineer II is the first level of a two-level career progression of Civil Engineer II and III.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Plans and manages designs, technical documents, and reports while ensuring compliance with city technical specifications, design guidelines and applicable codes and ordinances for assigned projects.
    • Reviews and approves plans and specifications, designs, technical documents and reports to ensure compliance with city technical specifications and design guidelines.
    • Exercises professional judgment in line with civil engineering, and relevant laws and codes.
    • Collaborates with construction inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction; reviews plan for compliance with specifications and approves necessary changes.
    • Participates in a variety of special engineering studies to determine impact of various projects and prepares technical reports.
    • Maintains awareness of progress and budget on assigned projects; designs and ensures compliance to approved budget and designated time schedules for project completion.


    Qualifications

    Experience: Two or more years of engineering and project management experience is required. Experience working in a municipality or Public Works Department is preferred. Relevant experience may include an internship with a municipality, an engineering firm, or another relevant organization where the candidate gained practical knowledge in civil engineering or a related field.

    Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.

    Licenses & Certifications: Must have successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. A valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record is also required.

    Environmental or Physical Demands: This position requires working in a variety of locations and conditions, often splitting time between an office setting and construction sites. Outdoor work is subject to adverse weather conditions, noise and other environmental factors. Routine tasks involve sitting, walking, and standing, with frequent movement between multiple work locations, sometimes several times in one day. Fieldwork may involve exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, various forms of precipitation, fumes, temperature extremes, machinery vibrations, and other potential hazards. Some tasks are performed on uneven or water-soaked ground. The role also requires working in and around excavations, confined spaces, mechanized equipment, roadways, and bodies of water, necessitating a high level of alertness and safety awareness. The ability to see, hear, and smell is crucial for detecting potential issues and ensuring the safety of employees and others in response to the environmental conditions and hazards associated with this position.
