    What You'll Be Doing

    Join #TeamWake as an Environmental Consultant!

    Wake County On-Site Water Protection is looking for a qualified, self-motivated Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) with excellent problem-solving skills to join our team in the On-site Wastewater program. This position will conduct site, soil and well evaluations in accordance with NC laws and rules for sewage treatment and disposal systems, responding to new, existing, expansion and accessory structure applications in Wake County. All staff are equipped with EOS Arrow 100 GPS units for collecting and processing field data and have access to ground penetrating radar to conduct existing system approvals.

    The position requires good understanding of complex site evaluations, how different types of septic system are installed, and how the systems function once the operation permit is issued. We are looking for individuals that will foster working relationships with customers, installers, private sector consultants and the building community.

    In addition, this position will support and collaborate with other groups throughout the department. Additional duties will include operation & maintenance inspections (O&M), seasonal swimming pool inspections, oversight of grave removal, and natural disaster shelter duties.
    • Perform site, soil & well evaluations and permitting
    • Review private sector design proposals
    • Provide technical support and guidance to customers, installers, private sector consultants and the building community
    • Conduct final septic system inspections
    • Conduct Operation and Maintenance (O&M) inspections for septic systems as required under 15A NCAC 18E .1300
    • Conduct seasonal swimming pool inspections, oversight of grave removal, and natural disaster shelter duties

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or related field
    • Three years of experience in environmental planning, inspections or engineering
    • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Registered Environmental Health Specialist
    • 3 Years of Experience working as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)
    • Current State Authorization in Onsite Wastewater
