The Position

Biologists conduct fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects and research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; develop and implement project proposals and work plans; prepare recommendations; and participate in public relations activities.

Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. This is a supervisory position in the Habitat Division, Southern Region overseeing 3 habitat biologists and 2 water development technicians. The position provides regional supervision of habitat activities and provides, guidance, and direction across 5 primary program areas: technical guidance, water development, restoration and rehabilitation, mining, and private lands.

The technical guidance program involves reviewing planning documents and making recommendations to avoid, minimize, and mitigate impacts to wildlife through land-use planning at federal, state, county, and local levels. The water development program develops, protects and maintains artificial and natural water developments. The restoration and rehabilitation program involves coordinating, planning, funding, and implementing large-scale restoration and rehabilitation projects. The mining program implements NRS 502.390 plus NAC 502.460 through 502.495. Persons under the direction of this position implement Industrial Artificial Pond permitting, site compliance visits and input into mining operations to minimize impacts to wildlife and provides input into site reclamation. The private lands program provides technical advisement and financial support to private landowners to improve wildlife habitat values on private lands. Private lands work also involves working to develop conservation and access easements, acquisitions, and water rights investigations. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management or closely related field and four years of professional experience in wildlife, fisheries or habitat management; OR one year of experience as a Biologist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and include extensive walking under difficult conditions in remote and/or primitive locations. Special Requirements Statewide travel and outdoor work is required. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
