The railroad safety inspector conducts routine grade crossing, track, hazardous materials, motive power and equipment, operating practices and/or signal inspections. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

- Conducts compliance inspections to ensure carriers maintain safe operations under federal and state regulations.
- Conducts complaint investigations; obtains data from carriers, conducts interviews, on-site inspections, reviews records and other agency reports; develops a resolution process and prepares a close-out report; works with carriers, citizens, legislators, union representatives and other state and federal agencies to resolve issues; prepares reports of violations when necessary.
- Plans and implements a program of periodic safety inspections to provide optimum coverage of the railroad mainline track, sidings, and rail yards to detect, locate and evaluate deviations, such as cross-level, gage, and track profiles.
- Conducts accident investigations to determine root cause; works independently or as a team member to conduct unassisted or joint investigations with law enforcement, federal investigators or carrier officials and determine whether any state or Federal regulations were violated.
- Works with and maintains relationships with state, federal and local law enforcement officials and carriers to support the secure movement of people and goods by establishing processes to identify threats and vulnerabilities to the rail network.
Minimum Qualifications - The Railroad Track inspector is required, at a minimum, to have at least four (4) years of recent experience in track construction or maintenance.
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical specialization may be substituted for two of the four years of the experience requirement. Successful completion of the apprentice training program may be substituted for the four years of this experience requirement.
- Successful completion of a Range of Motion examination.
Special Working Conditions: - Job requires regular, statewide, overnight travel.
- Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
- Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
- Substitution of education for the experience requirement may be allowed.
- Remote work from another MoDOT facility will be considered.
- Waiver of minimum requirements may be allowed.
Preferred Qualifications - Federal Railroad Administration Certification as a track inspector is preferred.
