  • Job Description

    Minimum Qualifications

    Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

    When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

    If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

    Duties Description

    As a Trades Generalist, duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Complete journey-level work in a primary trade in one of the following: carpentry, masonry and plaster, or painting on buildings and structures, preferably historic buildings.
    • Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the building trades.
    • Exhibit a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in their respective trade.
    • Plan and lay out work following blueprints, specifications, instructions, including ordering materials and equipment.
    • Perform carpentry, masonry, and/or painting repairs, including roofing and structural repairs, finish work, window and door restoration, masonry restoration, and/or skilled painting and plaster restoration to preserve or restore the original nature of historic buildings and structures.
    • Read building plans; diagnose problems; supply rough sketches to scale for work to be performed; make detailed estimates for costs, including time and materials for various projects; and have a working knowledge of modern safety and practices and code compliance.
    • Use hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and measuring and testing instruments appropriate to the assigned trade.
    • Coordinate and execute projects, work independently with a minimum of direct supervision.
    • Assign, supervise, review, train and evaluate work of lower-level employees.
    • Assist in snow and ice control and operate snow removal equipment during the winter months.
    • Assist in other areas of park operations as directed.
    • Perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods.

    Additional Comments

    OPERATING NEEDS:
    • Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
    • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other staff.
    • Must complete the Game of Logging (levels 1, 2, & 3) or approved equivalent as well as other associated trainings by the end of the probationary period or at the next class offering as a term and condition of employment.
    • Must have the ability to supervise others.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
    • Must be able to pass a physical for respirator use.

    Location Pay:

    The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($48,956) and the Downstate Adjustment ($1,650). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($59,757) and the Downstate Adjustment ($1,650).
