    The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax, and Novato.

    ABOUT THE POSITION

    MARINet is a consortium that connects seven public and two academic libraries, creating a powerful network of shared resources. The libraries share a catalog, most physical collections, and some digital resources, enriching the library experience for patrons across Marin County. MARINet also supports the public libraries’ internet connectivity through CENIC.

    As part of MARINet’s small, dynamic team, the Technology Systems Specialist III (TSSIII) will deliver regular training to a diverse group of library staff. They will write effective documentation for both training sessions and technology projects. The TSSIII will be responsible for installing, configuring, and troubleshooting MARINet’s desktop computers, printers, and network hardware.

    The TSSIII will also respond to urgent support requests from consortium library staff while advancing long-term projects. These projects may include upgrading a Linux server, implementing a help desk ticketing system, automating processes within the Integrated Library System (ILS) through custom scripts, and deploying a new email notification system, among others.

    Additionally, the TSSIII will assume a leadership role when covering for the Systems Administrator, overseeing the team as the acting supervisor. This position involves supporting MARINet’s hardware, software, and network infrastructure while collaborating with MARINet staff, library personnel, working groups, and various vendors.

    Remote Work Options: Some duties for this position may be performed remotely. During the initial probationary period, the successful candidate will be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule. The successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for various meetings and work assignments upon short notice, as needed, and when deemed appropriate.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
    Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff's Department and must pass a Department of Justice LiveScan background check prior to appointment.

    This position may require travel between various County library and office locations.

    The ideal candidate is a skilled IT generalist and is comfortable troubleshooting local IT including hardware and software. They seek out ways to stay current and apply the latest methods and tool sets, while maintaining and improving legacy technology. Network administration experience and local workstation support are crucial. Familiarly with SQL, scripting (particularly Perl), Linux, database authentication, Innovative's Sierra ILS are helpful.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge of:
    • Techniques, equipment and diagnostic software used in the assembly, troubleshooting and repair of personal computers.
    • Standard desktop software.
    • Network and desktop operating systems.
    • Desktop software integration.
    • Network protocols.
    • Internet protocols and services such as WWW, FTP, NNTP, DNS, SMTP or others.
    • Principles of testing and quality assurance.
    • Techniques for the development of effective help documentation.
    • Training and presentation techniques.
    • Network/server configuration, installation and maintenance.
    • Programming languages for the personal computer such as Access, Visual Basic or others.
    • Techniques for explaining technical concepts to non-technical users.
    Ability to:
    • Apply desktop technologies to meet business requirements.
    • Integrate desktop software with custom applications.
    • Document, test and implement desktop applications.
    • Assemble, install, configure, repair and maintain computer hardware, peripherals and components.
    • Diagnose and resolve software application problems for desktops, networks, and interface systems.
    • Install, configure, modify and maintain applicable operating systems, applications, networks, and specialized software.
    • Provide training, assist users in problem resolution and explain system and application use.
    • Analyze plans, processes or programs and provide verification and reconciliation of specialized departmental systems, computer programs or system processes.
    • Maintain current technical knowledge of the field including learning new and existing software, applications, databases and hardware through formal, informal and on-the-job training and self study.
    • Organize own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.
    • Plan, direct and review the work of others on a project basis.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed. Typically, the equivalent of completion of two years of college level or technical training in computer science or a closely related field and three years performing network and/or personal computer user support.

    Experience in PC repair, network administration, application and software troubleshooting, computer operations, or a substantially similar field may be substituted for the college requirement on a year for year basis.
