    DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE
    The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office is dedicated to objectively and effectively investigating and prosecuting matters under the Law while recognizing the dignity of all individuals to achieve justice and minimize trauma to victims.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    Use your skills to perform varied and responsible specialized and confidential legal secretarial duties; compose and prepare correspondence; provides legal administrative support to attorneys, court officers, or law enforcement personnel; assist with calendaring and scheduling; and perform related duties as assigned.

    The selected candidate will have an opportunity to:
    • Perform general and legal secretarial duties related to the assigned functional area and department.
    • Draft pleadings, subpoenas, contracts, ordinances, and other legal document correspondence, memoranda, and reports, depending upon the office to which assigned, from notes, brief instruction, dictated tapes, or printed materials.
    • Calendar and schedule court dates, meetings, and appointments for attorneys, court officers, and other law enforcement personnel; file or arrange for the filing of legal briefs and other necessary paperwork with the court.
    • Process a variety of legal agreements, contracts, etc., following instructions of attorneys, court officers, or other law enforcement personnel.
    • Initiate specified correspondence such as transmittal letters for signature by appropriate staff; review finished materials for completeness, accuracy, format, compliance with policies and procedures, and appropriate English usage.
    • Collect information from a variety of sources pertinent to area of assignment; compiles data as necessary and prepares routine reports as required.
    • Type and draft a wide variety of finished documents, including both general and legal-related correspondence and documents; may use word processing equipment to input or retrieve data, and prepare reports using an on-line computer system.
    • Receive and screen visitors and telephone calls, providing information regarding the particular area of assignment, which may require the use of judgment and interpretation of policies and procedures or taking messages or referring the caller to the proper staff member.
    • Organize and maintain the law library as well as chronological and other files.
    • Relieve attorneys, court officers, or other law enforcement personnel of certain administrative matters by following up on projects, transmitting information, keeping informed of pertinent activities, and scheduling and arranging for meetings.

    Education and Experience:
    Any combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.


    Legal Secretary I:
    Equivalent to graduation from high school;
    AND

    Two (2) years of general secretarial and administrative office support experience.

    Legal Secretary II:
    Equivalent to graduation from high school;
    AND

    One (1) year of legal secretarial experience providing support to attorneys, court officers, or other law enforcement personnel,

    OR
    One (1) year of experience equivalent to the County's class of Legal Secretary I.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record.

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS
    The Human Resources Department will screen all applications to identify qualified candidates. After screening, qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the recruitment process.

    A written exam will be utilized to determine an applicant's ranking and placement on the eligibility list. The online examination has been tentatively scheduled for 11/07/2024. If it is determined that you meet the minimum qualifications and are therefore eligible to participate, you will be notified by email prior to the examination.

    If you have taken this examination within six (6) months prior to the scheduled date of the examination, your score will automatically be transferred to this exam, and you are not permitted sit for this examination. If you have taken this examination from greater than six (6) months but within twelve (12) months prior to the scheduled date of the examination, you may elect to transfer that examination score or sit for the examination again; you must contact Human Resources prior to the scheduled exam date to request that your previous score be transferred.

    A transferred examination score does not guarantee passing the current examination administration. Examination pass points are set in accordance with the EEOC Uniform Employee Selection Guidelines.

    The County of El Dorado is recruiting applicants for Legal Secretary I/II. This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future limited term, full-time, part-time, and extra help vacancies for at least three (3) months. In accordance with Personnel Rules 1103.1 and 1105.1, an extra help or limited term employee may be transitioned into a regular employee if the department in which the employee works has a vacant allocated position for the same classification as held by the extra help or limited term employee and the appointing authority requests such transfer.

    Extra help employees are not considered regular employees, therefore do not attain civil service status, and do not receive benefits or paid leaves; however, they do accrue sick leave consistent with the law.
