    Overview


    One Agency, One Mission: Public Safety


    The Larimer County Sheriff's Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) is looking for volunteers from our community to bring together law enforcement and our citizens in the interest of safety and security in our homes, schools, offices, and neighborhoods. CPU volunteers are trained to educate and create awareness in Larimer County to reduce crime and ensure safety in our communities through partnership with the community and law enforcement.

    Volunteers work in three key areas: crime prevention (please see our crime prevention page for more details), community safety (includes community information both at events throughout the summer in Larimer County), and LCSO administration (specialized assignments include instructors for the Community Awareness Program (CAP) Terrorisms training, assisting in the Joint Information Center during disasters, etc.).

    Team members function as members of a non-commissioned volunteer force within the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. Members shall be responsible to and under the direct supervision of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) CPU Unit Coordinator and the Executive Director of the Professional Staff Division. All members must abide by the rules and regulations of the LCSO and Crime Prevention Unit. Assignments for team members will come through the Unit Coordinator.

    Responsibilities

    The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the job. The organization retains the right to modify or change the duties and responsibilities of the job at any time.

    • Provides community members with information on how to start and maintain neighborhood watch programs
    • Acts as a liaison between community members and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) to educate civilians regarding what actions they can take to protect themselves from becoming a victim of crime.
    • Educates community members on what role they play in partnering with law enforcement.
    • Commits volunteer hours to attend monthly meetings, fulfills the four key roles of the Auxiliary Unit (Neighborhood Watch programs, National Night out, Larimer County Fair, Children's Christmas party) and volunteers for other areas of interest as appropriate.
    • Provides administrative support (front desk, record maintenance, clerical).
    • Represents the Larimer County Sheriff's Office in a positive and professional manner when interacting with the community.
    • Attends monthly team meetings and training meetings.
    • Each team member is required to be trained and participate in the events listed under Crime Prevention below and may also choose to be trained and participate in Community Safety and Administration.
    • Attends and completes application training, including the required initial training.
    • Commits to one-year program activities.
    • Completes an 8-hour ride-along with an officer as part of initial training, as well as one ride-along per quarter.
    • When a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of Commissioners, all Larimer County employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker.
    • Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
    • Crime Prevention
    • Public Relations attendance at special events.
    • Assists and trains county neighborhoods in developing Neighborhood Watch programs.
    • Operates the education and awareness booth at the Larimer County Fair, schools, 9Health Fairs, kids' safety events, and other community events.
    • Presents at National Night Out events in August of each year.
    • Facilitates children's safety programs (schools, events, etc.).
    • Participates in the Sheriff sponsored Christmas party for at-risk-children.
    • Attends and presents at other events by request (examples include, but are not limited to; Wal-Mart truck rodeo, Lowes, Home Depot safety events, Boys and Girls Club events, school programs, etc.).
    • Community Safety
    • Completes home vacation checks.
    • Completes home security checks.
    • Facilitates Business Watch programs (TBD).
    • Provides Email notifications as needed to community representatives.
    • Administration
    • Provides service and performance duties of the Front Desk.
    • Assists in website/social media development.
    • Develops marketing materials.
    • Provides clerical assistance.
    • Provides administrative support
    • Provides Citizens Academy support.
    • Provides Public Information assistance.


    Qualifications

    • Must be at least 21 years of age - required.
    • Must possess a High School diploma or GED - required.
    • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license, or the ability to obtain one by start date - required.
    • Able to provide his/her own transportation and have appropriate vehicle insurance - required.

    Other Information to Note:

    An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. Successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
