    DESCRIPTION

    DESCRIPTION

    The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, Environmental Health Bureau, is recruiting for a full-time unclassified Health Educator I. Under the supervision of the Lead Hazard Reduction Program Coordinator, this position helps communicate with and educate residents in the areas of vector control, lead-based paint, home-based hazards, asthma prevention and management, and other environmental hazards.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Educate and inform tenants and owners of the negative health impacts of lead and other home-based hazards.
    • Provide in-person asthma education and case management.
    • Distribute educational materials to property owners, tenants and the public.
    • Participate in health fairs and other outreach events.
    • Encourage property owners and tenants to enrollment in Healthy Homes, Asthma management, and other programs.
    • Collect and verify income eligibility of tenants.
    • Educate and assist tenants if/when they need to be relocated during Lead Hazard Reduction or other home-based repairs.
    • Enter data into Microsoft Office Suite software (Excel, Word, etc.).
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • High School diploma or equivalent and
    • Two years’ experience in a health education setting. Education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. *must provide proof if qualifying with degree
    • A valid California motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Bilingual in English / Spanish

    • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all levels of the organization.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, be flexible, and manage multiple assignments in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
    • Proficiency with computers, including internet, email, and office productivity software (i.e. Microsoft Office).
    • Cultural sensitivity.
    • Knowledge of family structure and community dynamics of population served.
    • Ability to accept diverse personal and cultural behaviors.
