Summary: The Deputy Marshal supports the safety and security programs of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District. This is a part-time (0.6 FTE) position.
Job Location: Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, 300 S John Q Hammons Pkwy, Springfield, MO 65806. The duties of this position require work to be performed in-person and on-site. Occasional travel may be required.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities: - Work to ensure a safe and secure environment for court operations, proceedings, and events
- Protect court personnel, visitors, property, and facilities through appropriate safety and security measures
- Utilize and monitor surveillance and security systems
- Monitor court building, grounds, and parking areas
- Screen visitors, packages, and incoming mail
- Screen, escort, and supervise vendors and others performing work on or visiting the court's premises
- Travel as needed to provide off-site security or to perform other duties (including occasional overnight travel)
- Provide executive security for judges or other court personnel
- Investigate threats against court personnel and coordinate with local law enforcement to provide additional courthouse security and support for the judiciary as needed
- Work non-operational hours of the court as needed, including but not limited to weekends, holidays, and nights
- Comply with court policies and procedures, internal controls, and statewide judiciary policies
- Abide by applicable codes of conduct and court confidentiality requirements
- Demonstrate sound ethics, good judgment, and courtesy and respect toward others
- Display a careful and deliberate approach in handling confidential information in a variety of contexts
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of law enforcement and investigative techniques
- Knowledge of Missouri criminal law statutes, regulations, and arrest procedures
- Proficiency in the use of firearms
- Ability to maintain weapons qualification
- Ability to act, based on training and policy, when presented with a security risk
- Ability to de-escalate potentially dangerous situations
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with various stakeholders, including court personnel, attorneys, law enforcement partners, and the public
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and in both emergency and non-emergency situations
- Proficiency in computer applications and ability to learn new software as required
Minimum Qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in criminal justice or a related field is preferred (see below)
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in law enforcement
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle emergency situations effectively
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions
- Familiarity with crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
- Proficiency in the use of firearms and security systems and equipment
Preferred Qualifications: - Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field and five (5) years of law enforcement experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform all duties and responsibilities of the position
- Valid peace officer license pursuant to chapter 590 RSMo
- Experience working within the court system
- Certification in first aid, CPR, and use of an AED from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other nationally recognized organization
Special Requirements: - Must submit to and pass a background investigation as a condition of employment
- Must possess a valid Missouri vehicle operator’s license and have an acceptable driving record
- Must possess or be able to obtain any necessary permit to carry a firearm legally within Missouri
- Annual weapons qualifications
- Must carry a firearm at all times while on duty
- Must be able to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as pursuing fleeing individuals and restraining individuals who resist, under possibly hazardous conditions or situations
Salary and Benefits:Annual starting salary up to $30,710 depending on qualifications and experience.
