    Job Location: Central Office, 105 W Capitol Ave, Jefferson City, MO

    Reporting relationship: The Deputy Director/Chief Engineer reports to the Director of The Missouri Department of Transportation. This position is responsible for overall leadership, direction, and performance of the department.

    Principal Responsibilities: The Deputy Director/Chief Engineer serves as a contact with the Commission on matters of policy implementation and overall direction of the department and ensures effective coordination of public relations with all internal and external aspects of the department. This position serves as primary advisor on engineering issues and provides input on overall department decisions. This position also leads the seven district engineers who lead the department's work at the regional level.

    What you’ll do:

    • Assists the director in providing leadership and direction for the department.
    • Assists in providing direction and focus for all types of transportation in Missouri by developing the long and short-range transportation plan; and assists in directing the development and administration of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan.
    • Assists in the development of innovative solutions to Missouri's transportation needs.
    • Meets with elected officials, groups, and associations to deliver speeches, answer questions, and represent the department.
    • Assists in assessing department needs for additional resources and funding; actively seeks to obtain needed capital, including using innovative funding mechanism.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university curriculum.
    • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri.
    • Over nine years of experience in progressively responsible management positions with at least three years of experience in a senior level management role.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    An outstanding track record in managing complex and diverse internal operations as well as evidenced success at achieving real results.

    At least five years of progressively responsible management experience. This should include:

    • Proven leadership skills, including a positive history of working collaboratively to establish rapport and credibility among the staff and multiple stakeholders.
    • Proven track record of effective use of organizational performance management practices, innovation, and accountability measures.


    Special Working Conditions:

    • Job requires regular, statewide, overnight travel.
    • Job directly supervises senior and executive level managers.
