    Position Description

    Tacoma Public Library (TPL) is currently accepting applications for the position of Library Deputy Director. TPL is a vibrant , urban municipal library with eight locations: a large Main building in downtown Tacoma and seven branches distributed throughout the city. Our patrons are diverse, representing many cultures, languages, and socio-economic levels. We value innovative . patron-centered customer service and engagement; the successful candidate will share that commitment.

    Reporting to the Library Director, this individual will help oversee the operations, strategy, programs, and services across the library system.

    Responsibilities Include:
    • Assist in the overall management and administration of library services, across all neighborhood libraries
    • Support and enhance the library's role as a community-centered resource, ensuring services are responsive to the evolving needs of Tacoma’s residents
    • Collaborate with the Library Director in the development and execution of strategic goals and objectives
    • Act as a representative of TPL, fostering relationships with community organizations, local government, and other stakeholders
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of library services
    • Identify trends, challenges, and opportunities within the library profession, positioning TPL as a leader in public library services
    • Oversee key departments such as public services and collections & technical services
    • Work with the Library Director and other senior staff to identify funding opportunities and manage grant applications
    • Represent the Library to internal leadership, elected officials, the Library Board of Trustees and outside agencies
    • Make interpretive decisions on behalf of the organization regarding the means for executing the goals established by the Library Director and Library Board of Trustees, subject to constraints imposed by available technology and resources
    • Attend meetings with city officials, community agencies, partners and local organizations
    • Develop performance metrics, policies and procedures; evaluates current and/or proposed policies, practices and metrics to determine effectiveness; ensures compliance to policies, practices and regulations
    • Participate in budget development by assisting the Director with budget preparation and management
    • Research, compile and analyze complex and sensitive financial, strategic, operational or related data


    Qualifications

    Minimum Education*
    A Master of Library Science (MLS) or a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an accredited library science program.

    Minimum Experience*
    8 years of library experience including prior managerial experience.

    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
    Washington State Librarian's Certification is required within 60 days of hire

    Insurance Plans: You may participate in one of several group health insurance programs. Employees and their dependents are covered by a medical-surgical-hospital plan, vision plan, dental plan, and employees are covered by a long-term disability plan. Short-term and expanded long-term disability insurance and Deferred Compensation options are also available.
    Employees are covered by the State Industrial Insurance Act.

    Paid leave: Library Employees are entitled to receive paid holidays, and Personal Time Off (PTO).

    Retirement: All employees of the Library except part-time Pages, temporary employees, and certain project employees, are included in the City of Tacoma Employees' Retirement System. Information on the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System can be found at www.cityoftacorna.org or by calling (253) 502-8200. All members of the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System are also covered by Social Security.

    The Tacoma Public Library is not a department of the City of Tacoma and the Library's employees are not employees of the City. The Library is a separate entity with its own governing body. The Library's governing body is the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees.

    Employees of the City of Tacoma who accept employment with the Tacoma Public Library will lose their City of Tacoma employee seniority. They will also find that their leave accruals, and some of the benefits enjoyed as employees of the City of Tacoma do not carry over when they are hired for a position with the Tacoma Public Library.
